Chapter 7 - The Emergency C-Section

The doors of Metro Valley Trauma Center’s ambulance bay burst open with a deafening crash as the gurney was propelled inside at a full sprint.

"Code Crimson! Maternal hemorrhage and severe fetal deceleration!" the trauma nurse shouted, running alongside the gurney as Clara was rushed down the sterile white corridor.

The ceiling lights whipped overhead like a strobe effect. Clara was barely conscious, her skin ashen, her lips tinted blue from lack of oxygen.

"Clara! Can you hear me?"

A face appeared above her. It was Dr. Miriam Hayes, the hospital's Chief of Obstetrics and Clara's trusted personal doctor. Miriam’s eyes were wide with shock, but her hands were steady, working with practiced, ferocious efficiency.

"Miriam..." Clara managed to choke out through the plastic mask. "The baby..."

"I've got you, Clara. I've got you both," Miriam said fiercely, stripping away the blood-soaked sheets as they entered OR 3. "Get her on the table! General anesthesia, NOW! We don't have time for an epidural—this baby needs to be out in ninety seconds!"

"Blood pressure is fifty over twenty-five!" the anesthesiologist barked. "Push two units of O-negative and start the rapid infuser! She's in DIC—her blood isn't clotting!"

Clara felt cold metal against her skin, the sharp pinch of IV lines being swapped, and the cool rush of an anesthetic cocktail burning through the veins of her neck.

Her vision began to swirl into a gray vortex. The last thing she saw before the darkness consumed her was the digital clock on the operating room wall: 3:52 AM.

Outside the operating suite, the clean corridor was deathly quiet.

Eleanor Sterling stood by the scrub sinks, her arms crossed over her chest, watching through the double-paned reinforced glass window. Her jaw was set like granite. Two armed security guards stood on either side of the entrance, their eyes scanning the hallway.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the far end of the surgical corridor clicked open.

A figure strode through the shadows.

He was wearing standard surgical scrubs, a bouffant cap, and a paper mask pulled up over his nose. But Eleanor didn't need to see his face to recognize the arrogant, predatory gait.

Julian Vance.

He had bypassed the main hospital lobby entirely, entering through the basement loading docks and using his private master keycard to ride the service elevator directly to the surgical floor.

"Julian," Eleanor said, her voice echoing off the sterile tiles.

Julian stopped twenty feet away. He pulled the paper mask down, revealing a face twisted with manic sweat and desperation. In his right hand, he carried a sterile surgical tray covered with a green cloth.

"Eleanor," he said, his voice disturbingly calm. "Step away from that door."

"You are trespassing on hospital property, Dr. Vance," Eleanor said, raising her hand to signal the guards. "Your license is revoked. Your security clearance is terminated. Drop whatever is on that tray and put your hands behind your head."

The two security guards drew their tasers, stepping forward. "Doctor, stop right there!"

"I am the Chief of Surgery!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with unhinged fury. "My wife is on that table! There are severe vascular complications that only I can resolve! Hayes is an amateur—she’ll sever the uterine artery! I have a legal right to oversee the procedure!"

"You gave up your rights when you locked her in a bedroom to die," Eleanor said, stepping directly in front of the OR entrance, blocking the access panel with her body. "You aren't touching her, Julian. Not now. Not ever."

Julian sneered, his eyes darting toward the glass window.

Inside the OR, the surgical drape was raised. Dr. Hayes made the rapid transverse incision across Clara's lower abdomen.

Julian lunged forward, reaching beneath the green cloth on his tray to pull out a heavy surgical scalpel. "Get out of my way!"

Before he could take two steps, the lead security guard fired.

*THWIP-POP!*

Two electrical prongs struck Julian directly in the center of his chest. Fifty thousand volts of electricity surged through his muscular frame.

Julian let out a strangled, guttural gasp, his body seizing violently. The scalpel clattered to the floor, sliding across the linoleum tiles. His knees gave out, and Dr. Julian Vance crashed face-first onto the sterile floor of the very corridor where he had once walked like a god.

The guards rushed forward, pinning his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

"Secure him in the holding room," Eleanor commanded without even glancing down at him.

At that exact moment, a thin, piercing sound broke through the hum of the operating room machines.

It was faint at first, weak and wet, but unmistakably human.

A cry.

Eleanor spun around, pressing her palms against the glass.

Inside the OR, Dr. Hayes was holding a tiny, fragile, blood-streaked infant girl. The neonatal resuscitation team swarmed the infant table, suctioning fluids, checking reflexes, and wrapping her in sterile silver warming blankets.

"We have a pulse!" the neonatologist announced through the intercom speaker. "She's breathing on her own! Apgar score is seven and rising!"

Eleanor let out a long, ragged breath that she felt like she had been holding for hours.

May you like

Down on the floor, Julian Vance lay pinned beneath the boots of two guards, his cheek pressed flat against the cold tiles, forced to listen to the sound of his daughter’s first breaths—the very breaths he had tried so desperately to extinguish.
