Chapter 3 - THE SON WHO SAW TOO MUCH

Ethan sat on the edge of a guest-room bed with his shoes still on, shoulders drawn inward, while Claire waited near the window and Daniel stood in the doorway asking permission to enter his own son’s room.

“Can I come in?”

Ethan looked at Claire.

She nodded only when he did.

Daniel stepped inside.

He did not sit beside Ethan.

He chose the chair across the room.

“I should have protected you before tonight.”

Ethan looked down.

Daniel continued.

“I saw Vanessa hurting you and stopped it, but I also understand she thought my anger could be used to scare you.”

Ethan’s eyes lifted.

“Are you mad?”

“At you?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“About the key?”

“No.”

“About the office?”

“No.”

Ethan’s shoulders loosened slightly.

Daniel swallowed.

“I’m mad at myself for creating a house where you could believe telling me the truth might get you in trouble.”

Ethan stared at him.

Daniel did not ask for forgiveness.

That restraint mattered.

The next morning Detective Ortiz returned with news.

Thomas Reed had been located.

Not arrested.

Located.

He had walked voluntarily into a federal field office in Baltimore carrying the brown envelope from the bank.

Daniel almost laughed from relief.

Then Ortiz added, “He asked specifically to speak with you.”

Federal investigators joined the case because the transfers crossed state lines.

Reed appeared by secure video.

He was sixty-eight, thin, gray-haired, and looked nothing like a criminal mastermind.

He looked tired.

“Daniel.”

Daniel leaned toward the screen.

“Why were you in my house?”

“I was not.”

Daniel turned to Ortiz.

She nodded.

“Bank footage confirms Reed was with Vanessa at the bank, but the man in your office appears taller.”

Daniel looked back.

“Then who was in the office?”

Reed hesitated.

“Marcus.”

The room froze.

“He wore a gray jacket and a cap.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

His own brother.

“What did he take?”

“The flash drive.”

“Why?”

“Because it contains the audit.”

“We know.”

“No.”

Reed leaned closer.

“You have part of the audit. The drive also contains an audio recording Henry made before he died.”

Margaret gasped.

Daniel turned.

She looked terrified.

“What recording?”

Reed continued.

“Henry confronted Marcus about the three accounts.”

Daniel sat down.

“Four years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Why wasn’t Marcus removed?”

“Because Henry died the next morning.”

Silence.

Ortiz leaned forward.

“Are you suggesting foul play?”

Reed shook his head.

“I am saying Henry died before he acted.”

Officially Henry suffered a heart attack.

No autopsy had been requested because he had a history of cardiac problems.

Reed never believed Marcus killed him.

But Marcus benefited from the timing.

The three accounts continued.

Reed had spent years collecting evidence.

“Why disappear?” Daniel asked.

“Because Marcus threatened my daughter.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Again.

A child used as leverage.

Reed continued.

“I left to protect her.”

Claire asked, “Why come back now?”

“Because Henry’s audit surfaced.”

“How did you know?”

“Vanessa contacted me.”

Everyone looked at the hallway.

She had not simply been helping Marcus.

She had also been reaching toward Reed.

The loyalties were more complicated.

Reed explained Vanessa found evidence months earlier that Marcus was transferring money through family entities.

At first she helped him.

Why?

Because Marcus convinced her Daniel would lose everything in a tax investigation unless the money was moved temporarily.

Later she realized the transfers were not temporary.

She panicked.

She contacted Reed after finding his name in old files.

“So she was helping expose Marcus?” Daniel asked.

Reed nodded.

“And still helping him?”

“Yes.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why both?”

“Because Marcus had evidence Vanessa signed several transfer authorizations.”

Daniel understood.

She was trapped.

She had participated long enough to become vulnerable.

Marcus used that.

Reed told her the only protection was to recover original documents proving Marcus orchestrated the scheme.

That was why they entered the safe-deposit box.

The envelope contained copies of transfers with metadata tying Marcus to their creation.

“Then why steal my office key?” Daniel asked.

Reed paused.

“She didn’t.”

Daniel looked at Ortiz.

Ethan had said Vanessa gave him the key.

Reed explained Marcus had taken the missing third key months earlier.

He handed it to Vanessa that afternoon after using it to enter the office.

Then Vanessa gave it to Ethan because Marcus told her to get rid of it before Daniel came home.

The plan was not fully hers.

But she still complied.

“What did Marcus tell her to do at dinner?” Claire asked.

Reed’s expression hardened.

“To discredit Ethan.”

Daniel felt rage.

Reed continued.

“Marcus knew the boy saw him leaving the office.”

Daniel stood.

“He used Vanessa to humiliate my son so nobody would believe him.”

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Ethan entered unexpectedly from the hallway.

He had heard enough.

Daniel turned.

“Buddy.”

Ethan looked at the screen.

“That’s not the man.”

Reed froze.

“What?”

“The man in Dad’s office.”

Everyone looked at him.

“It wasn’t Uncle Marcus.”

Daniel crouched.

“You’re sure?”

Ethan nodded.

“He had a scar.”

Reed’s face changed.

“Where?”

Ethan touched his left eyebrow.

Reed whispered a name.

“Caleb Shaw.”

Ortiz wrote it down.

“Who?”

Reed looked toward Daniel.

“Marcus’s security consultant.”

Daniel knew the name.

Caleb handled executive protection for major company events.

He had access to the estate.

Reed continued.

“If Caleb was there, Marcus is already farther ahead than I thought.”

Ortiz asked why.

“Because Caleb does not steal documents.”

“What does he do?”

Reed looked at Ethan.

“He removes problems.”

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

Claire stepped toward Ethan.

Ortiz ended the call and immediately requested protection around the family.

Daniel asked Reed one final question before the screen went dark.

“Where is Marcus?”

Reed shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Then he added, “But if Caleb took the drive, Marcus is trying to open the third account before the audit can freeze it.”

Daniel asked, “How much is in it?”

Reed looked at him.

“Forty-eight million dollars.”

The scale changed everything.

Ortiz ordered urgent holds through federal channels.

Then Ethan tugged Daniel’s sleeve.

“Dad?”

“What?”

“The man said something else.”

Daniel crouched.

“What?”

“He told Vanessa, ‘Tell Marcus the boy didn’t see the basement.’”

Daniel stared.

“What basement?”

Ethan looked toward the west wing.

“The one under your office.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

There was no basement under the office.

At least not on any floor plan he knew.

Margaret sat down hard.

“There is.”

Daniel turned.

His mother looked twenty years older.

“Your father built it before Marcus was born.”

“Why?”

May you like

She looked toward the study.

“Because the three accounts were never the only secret.”
