Chapter 11 - THE FIRST VISIT

Robert did not see Michael privately for fourteen months.

There were legal restrictions and emotional boundaries.

Then Michael requested a supervised family-therapy session.

Robert agreed.

Not because ready to reconcile fully.

Because he wanted answer one question.

They sat across from each other.

Therapist, Dr. Samuel Greene, between.

Michael began:

“I’m sorry.”

Robert raised hand.

“I know.”

Michael stopped.

Robert asked:

“When she picked up the bat, what were you thinking?”

Michael looked down.

“I thought she was bluffing.”

“When she hit me?”

“I froze.”

“And when she called police?”

Michael’s face collapsed.

“I chose her.”

Robert nodded.

That was what he needed.

Not “I was confused.”

Not “it happened fast.”

Michael continued.

“I thought if I contradicted her, everything would come out. The documents. The money. My business.”

“So you protected yourself.”

“Yes.”

Robert’s eyes filled.

“Thank you.”

Michael looked surprised.

“For what?”

“For saying it correctly.”

Accuracy again.

Michael asked:

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

That answer hurt.

“I don’t trust you.”

Michael nodded.

“Fair.”

“Love and trust are not same.”

Michael cried.

Robert too.

The session lasted forty-five minutes.

No hug.

At end, Robert said:

“I’ll come again next month.”

That was all.

Relationship rebuilt slowly.

Michael completed restitution.

Worked salaried job.

No access to Robert’s accounts.

No expectation.

Vanessa and Michael divorced during criminal proceedings.

Why?

Michael said scheme destroyed marriage.

Vanessa said he blamed her.

Both had participated differently.

No need force reconciliation.

Vanessa moved after release.

Robert had no contact.

Claire never sought.

She did not need to interview antagonist forever.

Michael’s visits with Robert became ordinary over years.

Coffee.

Lunch.

No money talk unless Robert initiated.

One day Michael paid lunch.

Robert laughed.

“Progress.”

Humor.

Still, boundaries remained.

Michael never received keys.

Never managed bills.

Never became healthcare agent.

Repair did not restore every role.

It restored relationship within safer limits.

That was more honest.

The second family-therapy visit ended with a hug.

Not planned.

Michael was leaving.

Robert said:

“Drive safe.”

Michael turned, eyes wet.

Then asked:

“Can I hug you?”

The question mattered.

Robert hesitated.

“Yes.”

Brief.

No camera.

No declaration.

Trust was not restored by hug.

But consent was.

The next month Robert canceled session because tired.

Old Michael might have panicked.

Is he punishing me?

New Michael said:

“Okay. Next month if you want.”

Robert noticed.

Another month, Michael arrived late.

Robert became angry.

“You don’t respect my time.”

Michael apologized without blaming traffic.

They continued.

Repair included ordinary disappointments.

Not every conflict became about bat.

Good.

Michael eventually asked to tell Robert about job.

He had become senior analyst at a mid-sized manufacturing consultancy.

Salaried.

No owner title.

He liked.

“I sleep.”

Robert laughed.

“That helps.”

Michael also completed financial counseling.

He set automatic savings.

Paid restitution.

No loans from father.

At fifty, he had less status than at forty-seven.

More stability.

Robert respected.

They began watching baseball together.

First game, silence awkward.

Second easier.

No money talk.

Relationship expanded beyond apology.

Robert never invited Michael to move in or manage.

No need.

One day Michael said:

“I used to think if you trusted me again, you’d give me responsibility.”

Robert answered:

“Responsibility isn’t a prize.”

Michael nodded.

That sentence stayed.

He learned roles should match capacity and risk, not emotional reconciliation.

This helped when he later supervised younger colleagues.

He stopped equating loyalty with access.

Family lesson traveled into work.

Robert did not erase what happened.

He simply allowed new evidence to accumulate.

Trust became ledger of behavior, not feeling.

That was slower.

More durable.

The investigation and family repair continued to follow the same discipline: no one was allowed to turn suspicion into fact, age into automatic incapacity, love into financial authority, or remorse into a demand for restored access; each new decision had to be supported by evidence, consent, and behavior that remained trustworthy when nobody was watching.
