Chapter 2 - THE FOUR VIDEOS

Daniel did not open the videos in front of Emma.

That decision became the first of many he would make differently now that he understood how badly he had underestimated what his daughter had been carrying.

Megan took Emma to breakfast while Daniel called attorney Claire Bennett, who advised him not to edit, rename, or forward the original files until metadata could be preserved.

Claire arrived before noon with a digital-forensics consultant named Owen Price.

Daniel hated the formality of it.

Evidence bags.

Hash values.

Chain-of-custody notes.

His living room had become a place where professionals documented what had happened to his child.

Emma sat at the kitchen island drawing.

Megan stayed beside her.

Owen confirmed the four videos predated Emma’s recordings.

“They were already on the device,” he said.

“Who recorded them?”

“We’ll determine that.”

The first video showed the living room.

Daniel recognized the angle.

The phone had apparently been propped on the bookshelf.

Rachel entered carrying Laura’s cedar box.

She opened it.

She removed letters one by one.

Then she photographed them.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Why?”

Claire said nothing.

Rachel next removed Laura’s wedding ring.

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

He had found the ring inside the trash bag the previous night.

In the video, Rachel held it toward the camera.

Then another woman entered the room.

Daniel did not recognize her.

They talked quietly.

Owen increased the volume.

The woman said, “If the trust language says Emma gets control at eighteen, you can’t change that.”

Rachel answered, “Daniel can.”

Daniel stared at Claire.

“What trust?”

Claire looked equally surprised.

“Did Laura have one?”

“Not that I knew.”

The video continued.

Rachel photographed a folded document from the cedar box.

The unknown woman said, “You need the original.”

Rachel replied, “I’ll find it.”

Daniel stopped the video.

His hands were shaking.

Laura’s family had owned several commercial properties.

After her death, Daniel believed everything had passed through probate.

Emma had a college account.

Nothing more.

Claire asked, “Who handled Laura’s estate?”

Daniel gave her the name.

Claire wrote it down.

The second video showed Rachel searching Daniel’s office.

The third showed her on the phone saying, “He still thinks the properties were sold.”

Daniel felt sick.

The fourth video was the shortest.

Rachel stood in the garage beside a man Daniel recognized.

Mark Ellison.

Daniel’s accountant.

The two spoke too softly to hear.

Then Mark handed Rachel an envelope.

Daniel stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.

“No.”

Claire looked up.

“What?”

“He handles everything.”

Taxes.

Business accounts.

Laura’s estate paperwork.

The college fund.

Daniel called Mark.

No answer.

Claire stopped him from calling again.

“Let us verify before you alert anyone.”

Daniel paced.

“This started before Emma?”

“It appears the financial issue did.”

“Then why was Rachel frightening her?”

Nobody answered.

Emma appeared in the doorway.

Daniel immediately softened.

“Hey.”

She looked at the frozen video frame.

“That’s Mark.”

Daniel nodded.

Emma’s face changed.

“What?”

She looked at Megan.

Then Daniel.

“Rachel said Mark was going to make sure I couldn’t take Dad away from her.”

Daniel crouched.

“When did she say that?”

“Last month.”

“What did you think she meant?”

Emma shrugged helplessly.

“I didn’t know.”

Claire asked gently, “Did Rachel talk about money with you?”

Emma nodded.

“She asked if Mom ever told me about a building.”

Daniel’s breath caught.

“What building?”

“She called it Willow.”

Claire wrote it down.

Daniel knew the name.

Willow Court.

A twelve-unit apartment building Laura’s grandmother had owned.

Daniel had been told it was sold after Laura’s death to settle estate taxes.

Claire began making calls.

By afternoon she had answers.

Willow Court had never been sold.

Ownership had transferred into a trust created by Laura six months before her death.

Beneficiary: Emma Mercer.

Trustee until Emma turned eighteen: Daniel Mercer.

Daniel stared at the document Claire placed before him.

“I never signed this.”

“You did.”

“That isn’t my signature.”

Claire looked closer.

The signature was good.

Very good.

But Daniel knew his own hand.

Owen compared archived documents.

“Likely traced or digitally replicated.”

Daniel felt the floor move beneath him.

The trust currently owned Willow Court plus two investment accounts.

Combined value: approximately $3.6 million.

Daniel looked toward the kitchen where Emma was playing cards with Megan.

Rachel had not simply resented his dead wife.

She had been looking for access to Emma’s inheritance.

Claire found something worse.

Six months earlier, an amendment had been submitted naming Mark Ellison as co-trustee.

Daniel’s forged signature appeared again.

The amendment was rejected because an original notarized consent form was missing.

Laura’s cedar box likely contained that original.

Now Rachel’s destruction of the box made sense.

She had been searching.

Emma had seen too much.

The recordings began shortly afterward.

Daniel sat at the table until evening.

Every business trip replayed in his mind.

Every time Rachel told him Emma was becoming difficult.

Every time he thanked Rachel for being patient.

He had mistaken secrecy for stability.

Claire placed a hand on the table.

“Daniel, guilt is not a plan.”

He looked at her.

“What is?”

“Protect Emma. Preserve evidence. Let investigators do their work.”

That night police opened a formal investigation.

Mark’s office was served with a preservation order.

Rachel retained an attorney and denied everything.

She claimed Daniel was weaponizing a child during a marital dispute.

Then she filed for temporary access to the house.

Claire defeated the request.

Emma began therapy with Dr. Lena Ortiz, a child psychologist who made one rule clear to Daniel.

Emma would not become the family’s detective.

“She already did that job,” Lena said. “Now adults do it.”

Daniel agreed.

He wanted to listen to all forty-three recordings immediately.

Lena advised against doing so in Emma’s presence.

Investigators cataloged them.

The pattern became clear.

Rachel isolated Emma.

Threatened to send away Laura’s belongings.

Told her Daniel would choose his marriage over a “difficult child.”

Punished her for asking about Willow Court.

The belt incident was the final escalation.

Daniel’s anger became enormous.

Lena gave him another rule.

“Emma needs your steadiness more than your rage.”

So Daniel learned to leave the room when fury made his hands shake.

He ran at night.

He stopped drinking entirely.

He wrote down questions instead of interrogating Emma.

Slowly, she began sleeping longer.

Then investigators found Mark.

He had not fled.

He was in a hospital after suffering a heart attack the morning after Rachel left the house.

When doctors cleared him for questioning, he asked for immunity.

He had records.

Years of them.

And according to Claire, those records suggested Rachel’s plan had not begun when she married Daniel.

It had begun before she ever met him.
