Chapter 11 - THE SECOND CHANCE

Lucas spent seven months unemployed.

At first he blamed Emily.

Then Jonathan.

Then “cancel culture.”

Then HR.

Therapy? Maybe after panic.

He finally saw career coach.

Coach asked:

“What did Meridian say you did?”

“I used some drawings.”

“Whose?”

“My sister’s.”

“Did you say they were yours?”

“Not exactly.”

“Did you remove her signature?”

Silence.

“Then start there.”

Lucas rewrote resume without inflated Harbor One credit.

In interviews, when asked why he left Meridian:

“I falsified part of a promotion packet by using design work I did not create. I was terminated. I have corrected how I document contributions.”

Painful.

Most employers passed.

One smaller firm, Bridgepoint Development, interviewed twice.

CEO said:

“I don’t like what happened.”

“Neither do I.”

“Why should I trust you?”

Lucas:

“Because I can tell you exactly what I did without blaming my sister.”

That got him a probationary role, lower title, lower salary.

No design credit responsibilities initially.

He accepted.

No Emily recommendation.

He repaid monthly.

At parents’ smaller house, he started helping with expenses directly rather than asking Emily.

Growth.

He sent Emily an apology.

First version:

I’m sorry things got out of hand.

She returned:

Too vague.

Second:

I threw your suitcase into rain, shoved you, tried to throw away your drafting table, mocked you online, and used your drawings to make myself look better at work. I did those things because I had decided you were less important than me.

Better.

Then:

I did not know your success because I never cared enough to ask.

That line hit.

Emily did not forgive instantly.

She replied:

I received it.

Enough.

The twelfth chapter would focus Patricia and Thomas.

Parents had participated by laughing, approving room takeover, and hiding Emily’s contributions from Lucas.

Their apology could not simply say “we were wrong about your career.”

They had to admit career should not determine respect.

Patricia especially struggled with that.

Eventually, she would say it correctly.

Bridgepoint’s decision to hire Lucas was not charity. He had real strengths in client development, negotiation, and market research. The firm simply refused to let him present creative work without sourcing and reviewed his first-year submissions carefully.

A second chance worked because it was paired with controls.
