Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Guest

The suppressed gunshot produced a sharp, concussive *phut* that kicked up a tiny cloud of dust from the ceiling tiles.

In that microsecond, Elias Sterling did not try to dodge. Human reflexes cannot outrun a nine-millimeter round traveling at eleven hundred feet per second. Instead, he relied on combat prediction honed through years of lethal encounters. The moment Clarissa’s index finger tightened on the trigger, Elias twisted his torso twelve degrees to the right.

The bullet tore clean through the left lapel of his tailored jacket, grazing the high-tensile Kevlar weave beneath, absorbing ninety percent of the kinetic energy before deflecting away and embedding itself into the concrete doorframe behind him.

Clarissa gasped, her eyes widening in disbelief as she realized he was still standing.

Before she could adjust her sight picture to pull the trigger a second time, Elias closed the distance.

His movement was not human; it was the sudden, terrifying strike of a coiled viper. In two blinding steps, Elias crossed the eight feet of steel flooring. His left hand shot upward, deflecting the gun barrel toward the ceiling just as Clarissa fired a second round, sending the bullet harmlessly into the industrial ventilation duct above.

With a seamless, fluid motion, Elias drove his right palm into Clarissa’s sternum.

The impact was controlled, delivered with enough concussive force to completely empty the air from her lungs without fracturing her ribs. Clarissa let out a choked gasp, her legs giving out beneath her as the weapon was stripped from her manicured hand with effortless, surgical precision.

Elias cleared the chamber, dropped the magazine into his palm, and tossed the empty firearm onto the steel desk, where it clattered harmlessly beside the monitors.

Clarissa collapsed onto the leather office chair behind her, clutching her chest, gasping for breath, her face pale as linen.

Victor scrambled to his feet, terror overriding his common sense. He lunged toward the open vault door in a blind, pathetic attempt to escape into the crimson-lit hallway.

Elias didn't even turn his head. He simply extended his left leg backward in a low, lightning-fast sweep.

Victor’s shins collided with Elias’s heel. The hotel manager went airborne for a terrifying split second before crashing violently onto his face against the steel tiles. His nose broke on impact with a wet, crunching sound, blood instantly smearing across the floor.

"Aaargh! My nose! God, my nose!" Victor shrieked, rolling over onto his back, clutching his face with both hands, blood leaking between his fingers.

Elias walked slowly over to the fallen manager. He looked down at him with the exact same expression Victor had worn in the alley three hours ago—a look of absolute, unhurried disgust.

Elias bent down, picked up the titanium USB cryptographic key that Victor had dropped on the floor, and rolled it between his fingers.

"You dropped this, Victor," Elias said softly.

"Please..." Victor sobbed, his voice muffled by blood and tears. "Please don't kill me! It wasn't my idea! It was Clarissa! She planned everything! She set up the Belize accounts! She hired the men who ran your sister's car off the road! I just managed the books! I was just following orders!"

"You miserable coward!" Clarissa wheezed from the chair, coughing as she struggled to regain her breath. "Shut your mouth, Victor!"

Elias ignored them both. He walked over to the stainless-steel workstation, inspected the active screen, and slid the titanium key into the port.

The terminal chimed. A massive green dialogue box appeared on the center monitor:

**[DUAL-KEY HARDWARE AUTHENTICATION: VERIFIED]**

**[INTERMEDIARY ESCROW HOLDING: $18,400,000.00 USD]**

**[AWAITING FINAL ROUTING AUTHORIZATION...]**

Clarissa watched in horror as Elias leaned over the keyboard, his fingers hovering over the glowing keys.

"What are you doing?" Clarissa whispered, her voice trembling. "If you authorize that transfer... it goes to Panama. It’s untraceable."

"It was never going to Panama, Clarissa," Elias replied without looking at her. "Sarah modified your routing protocols forty minutes ago while Victor was busy beating teenagers in the alley. The moment I press this button, that eighteen point four million won't go to Blue Horizon Holdings."

He tapped a sequence of sixteen commands into the console.

"Where is it going?!" Victor cried from the floor, his eyes wide with terror.

Elias turned his head, looking directly at the broken, bleeding man.

"It’s going to an irrevocable trust fund registered in the name of Leo Ross—the legitimate grandson of Julian Vance. And forty percent of it is transferring directly into the operating account of St. Jude’s Rescue Mission."

Elias struck the final enter key with a single, resounding click.

The screen flashed brilliant green:

**[TRANSACTION COMPLETE: $18,400,000.00 TRANSFERRED SUCCESSFULLY]**

**[CONFIRMATION HASH: ST-JUDE-RESTITUTION-094]**

Victor stared at the screen, his entire world, his future, his wealth, and his freedom vanishing before his eyes in a cascade of digital confirmation codes.

"No..." Victor whimpered, clutching his bloody face. "No, no, no..."

May you like

"And now," Elias said, straightening his cuffs, "the second part of the transaction begins."
