Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Beast

The deafening wail of the facility sirens pulsed in time with the flashing amber backup lights, casting long, grotesque shadows down the narrow hallway. The smell of burning electrical ozone drifted through the air vents.

Daniel grabbed Ethan’s collar, pulling the teenager behind his back. “Stay behind me. Don't look at anything except my heels. If I tell you to run, you sprint like your life depends on it.”

“Dad, they have tactical gear,” Morales stammered, his fingers fumbling desperately with his sidearm. “Mason’s private contractors aren't street thugs. They’re ex-mercenaries he uses to scrub compromised sites. We have to barricade this room!”

“Barricade a room with no second exit?” Daniel spat, shoving Morales toward the door. “That’s how you get butchered like cattle in a slaughterhouse. Move! Toward the sally port!”

Daniel peeked through the wire-reinforced glass of Processing Room C’s door.

At the end of the long institutional corridor, fifty yards away, three silhouettes stepped through the shattered glass of the intake lobby. They moved with terrifying, fluid discipline. They wore matte-black tactical plate carriers, balaclavas, and carried suppressed submachine guns fitted with green laser designators. The emerald beams sliced through the smoky gloom, sweeping across the floor like hunting spiders.

*Pfft. Pfft.*

Two muffled, pneumatic coughs echoed down the hallway.

A civilian desk clerk who had stepped out of the dispatch office collapsed instantly, two neat crimson blossoms blooming across his chest before his body hit the linoleum with a dull slap.

Ethan gasped, his hands clamping over his mouth.

“They’re not taking prisoners,” Daniel whispered, his blood running cold. “Morales, where does the utility conduit run?”

Morales was frozen in place, his pupils blown wide, chest hyperventilating. Daniel grabbed the guard by his tactical vest and slammed him hard against the cinderblock wall.

“Morales! The blueprints! Where is the physical access to the HVAC maintenance tunnels?”

“The... the laundry chute,” Morales stuttered, saliva flying from his lips. “Third door on the left! It drops down into the basement boiler room! There’s an emergency service hatch that opens into the stormwater drainage culvert!”

“Move!”

Daniel kicked open the processing room door.

Instantly, a green laser dot painted the center of his chest.

Daniel dove forward onto the floor, dragging Ethan down by his hood just as a suppressed burst of 9mm rounds ripped through the drywall where their heads had been a fraction of a second earlier. Plaster dust exploded in a white blinding cloud.

Morales panicked. The corrupt guard screamed, drawing his service weapon and firing blindly down the corridor: *BANG! BANG! BANG!*

The muzzle flashes illuminated the hallway in strobe-like bursts. But Morales’s shots went wild, chipping concrete and shattering light fixtures.

The reply was instantaneous and ruthless. A three-round burst from the lead contractor caught Morales in the throat and upper chest. The guard’s scream was cut short in a wet, choking gurgle. He slammed backward against the row of metal lockers and slid down, his eyes rolling back into his head, pooling dark arterial blood onto the shiny floor.

“Ethan, GO!” Daniel roared.

Daniel rolled onto his side, brought his Glock up with both hands, and squeezed the trigger twice.

The heavy 9mm recoil snapped against his wrists. The first round struck the lead shooter’s Kevlar vest, staggering the man backward two paces. The second round caught the shooter squarely in the exposed throat just above the collar. The mercenary collapsed with a choked gasp, dropping his weapon.

Daniel didn't wait to watch him fall. He grabbed Ethan and shoved him through the swinging metal doors of the commercial laundry facility.

The room was vast, filled with massive industrial washers and towering steam dryers that hissed in the darkness. Rows of canvas laundry carts formed a labyrinth of cloth and metal.

“The chute! Over there!” Ethan pointed toward a stainless-steel hatch set into the concrete wall near the ceiling.

“Climb!” Daniel ordered, locking the heavy steel crossbar across the laundry room’s double doors.

Ethan scrambled onto the top of an industrial washing machine, his sneakers squeaking against the wet enamel. He grabbed the latch of the chute and yanked it open. A blast of warm, humid air smelling of lint and stagnant drainage water rushed out into the room.

Outside the heavy doors, the heavy impacts began.

*THUD. THUD.*

They were using a portable breaching ram. The heavy steel crossbar bent inward, the drywall screws tearing loose from the reinforced frame with a screech of tortured metal.

“Dad, come on!” Ethan shouted, hanging his legs into the dark chute.

“Go first! Slide all the way to the bottom! I’m right behind you!”

Ethan hesitated, his eyes wide with fear, then dropped into the void. Daniel heard the sliding *whoosh* of fabric against sheet metal, followed by a muffled splash twenty feet below.

*“I’m down! Dad, it’s clear!”* Ethan’s voice echoed up through the vent.

Daniel turned toward the door.

The frame gave way with a deafening crack. The double doors flew open, and the two remaining contractors spilled into the room, their suppressed weapons raised.

Daniel didn't try to shoot them. He knew he was outgunned, out-armored, and outmatched in an open firefight.

Instead, he leveled his Glock at the thick brass safety valve of the commercial high-pressure steam boiler sitting directly beside the entrance.

“See you in hell,” Daniel whispered.

He pulled the trigger three times.

The 9mm hollow points tore through the corroded brass casing.

A catastrophic jet of three-hundred-degree pressurized steam erupted from the boiler with the roar of a jet engine. A massive wall of blinding, boiling vapor expanded through the room in a split second, enveloping the two contractors.

Screams of agonizing torment ripped through the room as the superheated steam melted their synthetic balaclavas to their faces and seared their lungs.

Daniel didn't look back. He leaped onto the washing machine, tucked his arms against his chest, and dove headfirst into the darkness of the laundry chute.
