Chapter 5 - The Glass Mask Shatters

Richard’s knees felt like water. He clung to the brass railing of the stage deck, his knuckles turning white as he stared down at the ballroom floor.

The silence in the room was heavier than any condemnation. These were men and women Richard had groveled before for a decade—Park Avenue royalty, Swiss hedge-fund managers, European fashion moguls who measured human worth in bloodlines and net worth. For years, he had worn the mask of the charismatic, chivalrous visionary, charming their wives and convincing their boards to pour hundreds of millions into his accounts.

Now, they were looking at him like a mangy dog that had just bitten its master.

"Leonard," Richard croaked into the microphone on his lapel, his voice catching in his throat. He pointed a trembling finger at Leonard Ross, who was already on his smartphone, his back turned to Richard. "Leonard, listen to me! It’s a corporate power play! Claire is trying a hostile takeover before the opening bell! The figures—the audit—it’s doctored! We can still ring the bell on Monday!"

Leonard Ross didn't even turn his head. He spoke crisply into his phone: "Cancel the underwriting agreement immediately. Pull the S-1 filing before the SEC opens tomorrow morning. Freeze all Vanguard bridge loans. Now."

Ross hung up, slipped his phone into his breast pocket, and walked toward the ballroom’s grand exit doors without glancing once at the stage.

"Leonard! DON'T WALK AWAY FROM ME!" Richard screamed, his voice breaking into a humiliating squeak.

Down on the floor, Vanessa was spiraling into full-blown hysteria. Realizing the ship was sinking, she tried to grab the arm of Julian Thorne, the billionaire chairman of Thorne Luxury Holdings, whom she had spent the last three months flattering.

"Julian, please!" Vanessa pleaded, her voice choked with tears. "You know me! You know how hard I worked on this campaign! She’s framing me! That video was altered—Richard told me to—"

Julian Thorne pulled his sleeve from her grasp with such violence that Vanessa stumbled, nearly falling once more among the champagne glass shards.

"Do not touch me, Miss Vance," Thorne said coldly, taking a linen handkerchief from his pocket and visibly wiping the spot where her fingers had touched his sleeve. "You are an embezzler and a vulgar social climber. If you ever contact my office again, I will have my legal team file an immediate restraining order."

Vanessa stood frozen in the middle of the floor, the champagne soaking through her shoes. Her eyes darted around the ballroom, searching for a single sympathetic glance. She found none. The very people who had raised their glasses to her ten minutes ago were now treating her like toxic waste.

Up in the booth, the door unlatched with a soft, mechanical click.

Claire stepped out.

She had wiped the thin trace of blood from her ear with a clean napkin, leaving only a faint, defiant pink line along her jaw. Her spine was perfectly straight; her emerald dress moved like liquid jade around her ankles. She looked majestic, unbothered, and terrifyingly sovereign.

Richard lunged toward her the moment she emerged, his hands raised, his eyes bloodshot with rage.

"YOU BITCH!" he roared, lunging forward with all his weight. "YOU RUINED ME! I GAVE YOU EVERYTHING! YOU WERE NOBODY UNTIL I PUT MY NAME ON YOUR PATENTS!"

Before his hands could even reach within three feet of Claire, two massive men in dark charcoal suits materialized from the stage wings.

They weren't hotel security. They were tactical private protection officers from Blackwood Global, wearing earpieces and Kevlar vests beneath their tailored jackets.

The lead operative, a six-foot-four former Marine named Vance Keller, stepped in front of Claire. With a motion so fast it seemed effortless, Keller intercepted Richard’s wrist, twisted it inward, and drove his palm into Richard’s sternum.

Richard slammed backward against the wall with a sickening *thud*, the breath completely knocked out of his lungs. He slid down the wood paneling, clutching his ribs, gasping for air like a landed fish.

"Touch Mrs. Sterling again," Keller said, his voice flat, low, and completely devoid of emotion, "and I will break both of your collarbones before you hit the carpet."

Claire didn't even look down at the man gasping on the floor at her feet. She stepped over his outstretched designer shoe as if it were a stray piece of trash left behind by catering.

She took the small lavalier microphone pinned to her collar, adjusted it, and walked slowly to the edge of the stage.
