Chapter 5 - The Black Folder

The silence that settled over the grand foyer was heavier than the marble beneath their feet. Even the movers had paused, sensing that an entirely different kind of destruction was unfolding before them.

Julian stood frozen, his eyes wide and vacant, staring at the black binder in Arthur Sterling’s hands.

"Open it, Julian," Arthur said softly, his voice devoid of pity. "Or would you prefer I summarize the contents for your wife?"

"What is that, Julian?" Vanessa demanded, looking back and forth between her husband’s deathly pale face and the ominous leather folder. "Julian! Tell me what that is!"

Julian couldn't speak. His throat felt as though it had been packed with dry sand. He slowly reached out with trembling fingers and took the binder from Arthur.

On the front cover, printed in stark, embossed gold lettering, was the title:

**VANCE LOGISTICS INTERNATIONAL: AUDIT OF UNAUTHORIZED CAPITAL DIVERSION, FORGERY, AND CORPORATE EMBEZZLEMENT (2020–2024)**

Julian’s hands shook so violently that the heavy binder slipped from his grip, hitting the marble with a dull slap. Several loose sheets spilled out across the floor.

Vanessa dropped to her knees, frantically gathering the papers, her eyes darting over the dense legal terminology, bank wire receipts, and forensic accounting summaries.

"Account 8841... Cayman Island Trust... Transfer of $4.2 million... Forged signature: Eleanor Vance?" Vanessa looked up, her face draining of color. "Julian... what did you do?"

"You didn't think she would ever look," Arthur explained, looking down at them like an exterminator inspecting vermin. "Julian believed that because Eleanor had handed over the title of Chief Executive Officer four years ago, she had abandoned her oversight. But Julian failed to read the corporate bylaws of the Vance Global Parent Entity. Eleanor retained seventy-two percent of the voting super-shares. She held the master auditing keys to every domestic and foreign account."

Arthur stepped forward, tapping the heel of his oxford shoe against one of the wire receipts.

"For three years, Julian has been forging Eleanor’s signature on corporate guarantee bonds to secure private loans from international creditors. He used those loans to pay for this lifestyle: the forty-thousand-dollar-a-month private jet leases, the private security details, the million-dollar gallery openings in Manhattan, and the twenty-million-dollar buyout of his previous failed private equity firm."

"I was going to pay it back!" Julian suddenly shrieked, collapsing down onto the bottom step of the grand staircase, his head in his hands. "The maritime merger was supposed to close this Friday! I would have netted thirty-five million dollars in liquid stock options! I was going to replace every single dollar before the quarterly fiscal audit!"

"The maritime merger has been canceled, Julian," Arthur stated coldly.

Julian’s head snapped up. "What?!"

"Eleanor met with the board of directors of Oceanic Freight at eight o'clock this morning," Arthur said, delivering the blow with clinical precision. "She presented them with this exact file. When they saw that their prospective partner was an unindicted embezzler who had forged corporate promissory notes, they terminated the merger agreement instantly under the moral turpitude and fraud clauses. The board of Vance Logistics has just concluded an emergency meeting."

Arthur looked at his watch. "Thirty minutes ago, the board voted unanimously to remove you as Chief Executive Officer with immediate cause. Your corporate credit cards have been canceled. Your executive health insurance has been revoked. Your personal accounts at Boston Private Bank, which were cross-collateralized with the company's treasury reserves, have been entirely frozen by emergency civil injunction."

Vanessa let out a strangled, animalistic sound from the floor. She dropped the papers, scrambling backward as if the documents themselves were radioactive.

"Frozen?" she whispered, her voice trembling with hysteria. "Our personal accounts? My jewelry collection? My black card?"

"Everything that was funded through Vance Logistics treasury diversions is now seized as evidence in an active corporate recovery proceeding," Arthur replied. "Which means, Mrs. Vance, you currently possess whatever cash is in your purse, and whatever clothing Mr. Croft’s men allow you to pack in the next forty minutes."

"Julian, you idiot!" Vanessa suddenly screamed, turning on her husband with savage fury. She threw herself toward him, her hands clawing at his chest, beating against his silk robe. "You promised me! You swore to me you were the sole owner of everything! You told me the old woman was just a figurehead! You dragged me into this!"

Julian didn't even fight back. He sat on the stairs, letting his wife strike him, staring blankly ahead at the movers who were already taping bubble wrap over the massive 18th-century French oil paintings lining the hallway.

"Forty minutes, Julian," Arthur said quietly, stepping back toward the open doorway. "I suggest you go find a pair of trousers."
