Chapter 9 - The Moving Trucks on Oakmont Lane

The entire cul-de-sac of Oakmont Lane had gathered along the manicured sidewalks.

Neighbors who had endured Evelyn’s condescending glares at homeowners association meetings for two decades stood behind their wrought-iron fences, holding their morning coffees, watching the spectacle with unmasked fascination. Children on bicycles stopped to point. Domestic workers who had been treated with disdain by the Vances leaned against their hedge trimmers, smiling quietly to themselves.

Parked on the manicured front lawn of the mansion were two massive industrial moving flatbeds and a municipal waste truck.

Six uniformed movers were rapidly emptying the contents of the house. But they were not carefully wrapping heirlooms in bubble wrap.

Every single item that had been purchased with Katherine’s trust money—the antique French chandeliers, the custom Italian leather sectionals, the oil paintings, the eighty-thousand-dollar dining set—was being carefully loaded into a secure, climate-controlled moving container labeled *DESTINATION: ALDRIDGE PRIVATE STORAGE*.

Meanwhile, the personal items belonging to Richard and Evelyn—their clothes, their vanity trophies, their framed college diplomas, and their vintage golf bags—were being packed into cheap cardboard boxes and dumped directly onto the curb beside the municipal mailbox.

Evelyn sat on the curb, weeping hysterically, her expensive silk robes covered in dust and fallen pine needles. Her diamond rings sparkled mocking in the morning sun, useless against the reality of homelessness.

"Where is our car?!" Richard suddenly shouted, realizing the garage doors were open and empty. "Where is my Porsche?!"

A deputy standing guard at the driveway checked his clipboard. "The silver Porsche was repossessed three hours ago by the leasing corporation for non-payment and cancellation of corporate insurance coverage. The vehicle has been returned to the dealership."

Richard dropped his garbage bag onto the asphalt. He fell to his knees beside his mother, clutching his head, letting out a ragged, broken sob.

At that moment, the low, powerful rumble of an engine turned the corner of Oakmont Lane.

A sleek, midnight-black Rolls-Royce Phantom glided silently down the street, its polished chrome catching the midday glare. The neighbors parted like the Red Sea, watching as the magnificent vehicle pulled into the circular driveway, stopping exactly ten feet from where Richard and Evelyn were sitting on the curb.

The tinted passenger window slid down with a smooth, electric hum.

Katherine sat in the back seat.

She wore an impeccably tailored ivory trench coat, large tortoiseshell sunglasses, and diamond studs that caught the light. Beside her sat Marcus Sterling, reviewing a digital tablet with a faint, satisfied smile.

Katherine lowered her sunglasses, looking down at the two pathetic figures huddled beside a pile of cardboard boxes.

"Katherine!" Evelyn shrieked, crawling forward on her knees across the asphalt, reaching toward the car’s tires. "Katherine, have mercy! Look at me! Look at what you've done to your mother! We took you into this family! We gave you our name!"

Katherine didn't look at Evelyn. Her eyes shifted slowly to Richard.

Richard looked up at her from the pavement. His eyes were red, swollen, and filled with a mixture of terror, humiliation, and desperate longing. He saw the woman he had dismissed as an incompetent housemaid. He saw the woman whose scalded arm he had mocked.

He saw the master of his entire universe.

"Katherine..." Richard whispered, his voice trembling. "Please. What do you want from us? What do you want?"

Katherine leaned slightly toward the open window. Her voice was calm, clear, and carried across the quiet cul-de-sac for every neighbor to hear:

"I don't want anything from you, Richard," she said softly. "You have nothing I need. And you have nothing left to give."

She reached into her handbag, pulled out a pristine, white linen handkerchief, and casually tossed it out the window. It fluttered down through the air, landing softly atop the pile of cardboard boxes containing his clothes.

"You should be more careful," Katherine whispered.

The electric window slid shut with a smooth, final click, sealing her inside the quiet luxury of her own creation.

The driver shifted the Rolls-Royce into reverse, turned smoothly around the circular fountain, and accelerated down Oakmont Lane, leaving Richard and Evelyn Vance choking on the exhaust of the empire they had taken for granted.
