Chapter 4 - The Golden Trap

Richard’s hands shook so violently that he dropped his phone onto the thick boardroom carpet. It bounced with a dull thud. Around the oval table, nobody moved to pick it up for him. The executives he had bullied, patronized, and lorded over for a decade stared at him with cold detachment.

“Arthur, please,” Richard pleaded, lunging toward the older partner. “You’ve known me for twelve years! Clara is bitter! We’re going through a divorce! She’s fabricated these numbers out of spite to ruin my reputation!”

Arthur Pendelton stood up slowly. He adjusted his glasses and looked down at Richard not with anger, but with profound disgust.

“Clara didn’t fabricate the wire logs, Richard. The bank verified the cryptographic hashes ten minutes before you walked in,” Arthur said quietly. “And unlike you, Clara never lied to this board. When she resigned her compliance post three years ago, she warned us that your internal controls were porous. We thought she was being overprotective of your marriage. We were fools.”

Arthur picked up his leather portfolio. “The board is holding an emergency vote right now. By unanimous consent of the independent directors, you are hereby suspended as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Partner of Sterling Vanguard, effective immediately. Building security will escort you from the premises.”

“You can’t fire me! I founded this firm!” Richard roared, the veins in his forehead protruding as if they might burst. “My name is on the front door!”

“And by tomorrow morning, your name will be on an indictment sheet,” Arthur replied coldly.

Two burly men in dark security uniforms stepped into the boardroom. They didn’t touch Richard, but their physical presence was an iron wall. “Mr. Sterling. Please step out to the reception area. Do not access any terminals.”

Richard felt like he was drowning in grease. He stumbled backward out of the boardroom, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. As he entered the executive hallway, he saw Chloe standing near her cubicle, clutching her Chanel handbag, her face pale. She had evidently heard the shouting through the glass.

“Richard?” she whispered, scurrying over to him, her eyes wide with genuine panic. “What’s happening? Why are the IT people locking down my desktop? I can’t open my email!”

Richard grabbed her by the shoulder, digging his fingers into her flesh through her silk blouse so hard that she gasped in pain.

“The Cayman account, Chloe!” he hissed into her face, his eyes wild and bloodshot. “Aegis Holdings! Did you touch the funds? Did you move anything?”

“Ow! Richard, you’re hurting me!” Chloe whined, trying to twist away. “I didn’t touch anything! You told me that money was our future! You told me it was my retention bonus for staying with you! What did your crazy ex-wife do?”

“She gave the audit trails to the DOJ, you idiot!” Richard spit, dragging her toward the elevators. “We have to get to the bank! We have to liquidate the Cayman shell before the international injunction hits the offshore clearinghouse!”

Ten minutes later, Richard and Chloe were sitting in the back of a yellow cab—his Maybach driver having received an alert from the corporate office to return the keys immediately. Richard was furiously tapping on his personal laptop, using his mobile hotspot to bypass the company’s internal network.

He opened his personal offshore banking portal, based in George Town, Grand Cayman. The digital interface showed the account name: *Aegis Holdings LLC.*

Richard entered his master security key. His breath caught in his chest. If he could just wire the fourteen million dollars into a Swiss numbered account or convert it to cold cryptocurrency before noon, he could flee. He had a private passport in his safe at home. He could disappear to a non-extradition country in South America.

The portal screen loaded.

Account Balance: **$142.18.**

Richard stared at the screen. The numbers refused to compute. He blinked, wiped his eyes, and refreshed the browser.

Balance: **$142.18.**

“No... no, no, no!” he screamed, slamming his fist onto the leather seat of the cab. The taxi driver glanced back in the rearview mirror with alarm. “Where is the money?! WHERE IS THE MONEY?!”

He furiously clicked the transaction history tab.

A single transfer had taken place at 7:45 AM that morning.

*Transaction:* Inter-Institutional Seizure & Escrow Transfer.

*Destination:* United States District Court for the Southern District of New York Asset Forfeiture Registry.

*Authorization Code:* Court Order #24-CR-8891 (Presiding: Judge Sarah Vance).

Richard’s laptop slipped from his fingers and crashed into the footwell.

Chloe leaned over, looking at the glowing screen. “Richard? Where did the fourteen million go? Where is my bonus?”

Richard turned to look at her, his face completely devoid of color, his jaw slacked open.

“It’s not your bonus, Chloe,” he whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form words. “It’s federal evidence.”

And then, his phone vibrated once more. It was a text message from an unknown number. Richard reached down with numb, wooden fingers, picked it up, and unlocked the screen.

It was an image.

A high-resolution photograph of Clara sitting on the sunny veranda of an oceanfront house, the Atlantic Ocean stretching endlessly behind her. She was wearing a comfortable white linen shirt, holding a steaming mug of black coffee in her left hand.

On her left wrist, catching the morning coastal sunlight, was the Harry Winston vintage emerald bracelet.

Beside her on the table lay a formal court order, stamped with the seal of the New York State Supreme Court:

*EMERGENCY WRIT OF REPLEVIN & TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER: ALL STERLING MARITAL ASSETS FROZEN PENDING FULL FORENSIC DISSOLUTION.*

Beneath the photo was a single line of text from Clara:
