Chapter 6 - The Golden Boy’s Confession

While Vance sobbed in the basement, the nerve center of Redstone Air Base—the Command Operations Room—was in a state of high-intensity panic.

Dozens of monitors tracked military satellite feeds, flight tracking data, and encrypted DoD communication relays. Behind the glass partitions, three dozen senior officers and communications specialists were working in total silence under the watchful eyes of General Evelyn Cross’s personal security detachment.

Colonel Sterling walked into the room, holding a freshly printed manifest. His eyes were shadowed with guilt and sleeplessness.

"General," Sterling said, presenting the papers. "Airman Miller’s encrypted drive has been fully decrypted by base cyber command. It’s worse than Caldwell told us."

Evelyn took the tablet. "Explain."

"The counterfeit parts weren't just installed on the F-35 wing here," Sterling said, his voice trembling. "Apex supplied components to three other air bases: Langley, Nellis, and Kadena in Japan. There are currently sixty-four combat aircraft flying with structural turbine blades that have a ninety percent failure rate beyond eight hundred flight hours."

Evelyn felt a cold fury spike through her veins. "How many flight hours do those aircraft currently have?"

"Most of them are hovering around seven hundred and fifty, ma'am," Sterling replied grimly. "If we hadn't grounded this base today, within three weeks, we would have seen catastrophic airframe failures across three continents. It would have been the deadliest peacetime aviation disaster in military history."

"And Arthur Vance sat on the Armed Services Committee and approved every single procurement contract," Evelyn said, piecing together the monstrous puzzle. "He wasn't just covering up for his son. His son was running the regional distribution hub right out of our maintenance hangars."

Just then, a red light began flashing violently on the main command console.

*"Warning: Incoming Secure Transmission. Priority Alpha One. Clearance: Pentagon High Command."*

The operator looked back at Evelyn, his eyes wide with fear. "General Cross! It’s the Pentagon. It’s a direct video link from the office of General Arthur Vance. He’s demanding an immediate connection to Base Command. He’s overridden our local comm-block using an executive defense security key!"

Evelyn walked calmly toward the central conference screen. She adjusted her dress uniform, smoothed the lapels, and stood directly in front of the high-definition camera.

"Patch him through," she ordered.

The giant wall monitor flickered. The emblem of the Joint Chiefs of Staff appeared, followed by the video feed of an imposing, silver-haired four-star general sitting in an opulent mahogany office in Washington D.C.

General Arthur Vance looked like an ancient Roman emperor—chiseled, cold, and radiating absolute power. Four silver stars gleamed on each side of his collar.

*"Colonel Sterling!"* General Vance’s voice thundered through the audio monitors before the camera had even fully resolved. *"What the hell is going on down there?! Why is Redstone completely dark?! My office has received reports that my son was assaulted and dragged into a holding cell by unauthorized personnel! If this is some sick political play, Sterling, I will have your career burned to the ground by sunset!"*

Arthur Vance stopped abruptly as the camera focused.

He wasn't looking at Colonel Sterling.

He was looking directly into the cold, unyielding gray eyes of Major General Evelyn Cross.

The four-star general’s expression hardened from fury into something far more dangerous: calculated hatred.

*"Cross,"* Arthur Vance spat out, leaning forward onto his mahogany desk. *"I should have known. The Secretary’s pet hound. What are you doing at Redstone?"*

"Cleaning up your trash, General," Evelyn responded, her voice smooth, level, and completely devoid of fear.

*"You are interfering with a critical defense asset!"* Arthur barked, his face reddening. *"You have placed a combat-ready base under unauthorized lockdown! That borders on mutiny! Release my son immediately, restore communications, and return to Washington before I draft charges under Article 94!"*

Evelyn smiled. It was a cold, humorless curve of her lips that made Arthur Vance’s eyes twitch.

"Article 94 is Mutiny or Sedition, General," Evelyn said softly. "A fitting charge. Except it won't be filed against me."

She tapped her tablet, transmitting a file directly into the Pentagon’s secure inbox on the four-star's desk.

On the screen in Washington, an alert chimed. Arthur Vance glanced down at his terminal. His eyes scanned the document. Then, the undeniable shock registered on his face.

"That is the full confession of your son, Bradley," Evelyn explained, her voice carrying through the command center for every officer to hear. "Along with the complete offshore transaction records for *Vance Tactical Consulting*, the seized counterfeit turbine blades from Apex Aero-Defense, and the video testimony of Airman First Class Lucas Miller."

Arthur Vance’s breathing turned ragged. He looked back up at the camera, his imperial mask slipping, revealing the cornered beast beneath.

*"You think a bunch of maintenance logs can destroy me, Evelyn?"* he whispered with low, venomous malice. *"I built this Air Force. I have three cabinet secretaries in my pocket. I have the entire defense subcommittee on speed dial. By the time this reaches the White House, those files will be designated classified state secrets, and you will be retired to an administrative desk in Alaska!"*

"You would be right, Arthur," Evelyn said calmly. "If this were going to the White House."

She gestured to the communications officer behind her.

"What did you do?" Arthur demanded, genuine terror finally creeping into his aristocratic voice.

"I didn't send those files to the White House, General," Evelyn replied, her voice ringing out like a judgment from the heavens. "I sent them to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice Special Crimes Division, and the news desks of every major global network five minutes ago."

Arthur Vance’s jaw dropped. *"You... you committed treason..."*

"No, General," Evelyn whispered, taking one step closer to the camera. "I did my job. And if I were you, I’d look out your office window."

Behind the four-star general, the frosted glass doors of his private Pentagon office were suddenly thrown open. Six armed Federal Agents in dark suits, led by the Director of the CID, marched into the room, their weapons drawn, their badges held high.

Arthur Vance slowly turned his chair. The video feed captured the moment the lead agent produced a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.

*"General Arthur Vance, by order of the United States Attorney General, you are under arrest for conspiracy, treason, and the negligent homicide of Captain Marcus Cole. Stand up and place your hands behind your back."*

Arthur Vance’s phone slipped from his fingers, clattering onto his desk.

Evelyn raised her hand. "Cut the feed."

May you like

The monitor went black.
