Chapter 7 - THE HAND THAT OPENED THE BAG

The morning after the runway confrontation, Emily woke before dawn in Teresa's guest room and spent several minutes listening to the water pipes rattle as though the quiet might vanish if she moved. Her phone held hundreds of messages, some supportive and some cruel, but the only one she answered came from Grace, who asked whether they should still open the workshop at nine because three customers had appointments.
Emily told her yes, because the work that had shaped her life did not stop existing simply because the world had finally noticed it, and she wanted the apprentices to see that a victory could consist of returning to a useful routine. At breakfast Teresa pushed a plate of toast toward her, then admitted she had watched the runway announcement twice and cried when the camera showed Emily's mother on the screen.
By noon Judith and Nora invited Emily to review records newly produced by Northbridge under counsel's supervision, including a chain of purchase requests that traced the illicit project back to a planning meeting almost a year before Ryan first mentioned the launch. The earliest email was from Olivia, suggesting that existing designs could be acquired through Ryan's personal access for little or no cost, and the next reply came from Adrian, who proposed routing payments through Northbridge to conceal the source.
Ryan had not simply benefited after another person initiated the theft; he had responded with a description of the location of Emily's leather bag and a list of weekends she would be working late at her clients' homes. Reading that sentence made Emily feel again the shock of entering her bedroom and seeing the space beside her occupied by someone who had studied her routine not as a partner but as an obstacle to be managed.
Lydia's original scan had supplied the source material years earlier, but the later disappearance of the physical sketchbook had been arranged by Ryan with assistance from a building maintenance supervisor named Colin Reeves. Security records showed Colin entering their apartment under the pretext of checking a water leak on a morning when Ryan knew Emily would be away, and Colin had later received an unexplained payment through a vendor associated with Northbridge.
The payment record was compelling but did not alone prove the full account, so Judith obtained a sworn interview in which Colin admitted taking a black book from the sewing bag after Ryan left it unlocked in the hallway. Colin said he believed it belonged to Ryan and had been instructed to deliver it to the office, but his statement conflicted with a message in which he asked whether Emily might notice it missing.
Emily could barely speak when she learned how much planning had gone into stealing an object she kept beside her sewing machine, and Nora allowed her a moment before describing the next practical steps. Ryan, Olivia, and Adrian would each have an opportunity to respond, the company would need to examine its own control failures, and criminal referrals or civil claims would require independent decisions by the relevant authorities.
A second discovery concerned the original book itself, which had been placed in a locked Bellwether storage cabinet after Olivia instructed an assistant to remove it from Ryan's office. The notebook was recovered under documented conditions, with its brass corners, pencil smudges, and cracked spine preserved, and Emily was permitted to inspect photographs of it before any physical return could be arranged.
She recognized a small coffee stain near the page where she had drawn the first hooded coat after returning from her mother's funeral, and that mark nearly hurt more than the evidence of theft. She had been grieving then, moving pencil over paper because she could not yet put words around the loneliness, and Ryan had once held her shoulders while she worked and promised that her mother's memory would remain part of everything they built.
Olivia, confronted by the records and facing suspension, finally gave a detailed account of the pressure to meet financing targets, describing how Adrian guaranteed that Northbridge could provide a plausible chain of title for the designs. She acknowledged knowing Emily had not authorized the transfer, but she insisted Ryan had told her his marriage was effectively over and that Emily would accept a settlement once a successful launch made everyone richer.
Judith recorded Olivia's admission without inviting Emily to interpret its sincerity, and Nora stressed that cooperating only after exposure did not erase earlier conduct. Nevertheless, Olivia's statement helped identify additional records, including a presentation in which Ryan referred to Emily's designs as a low-cost asset because she lacked professional leverage and could be discredited through their pending divorce.
Emily had suspected Ryan thought less of her work as his salary increased, but seeing the dismissal turned into a line of corporate strategy was something colder than hearing him insult her aloud. She realized that public humiliation at the promotion party had served two purposes: Ryan wanted to discard his wife, and he wanted an audience who would later remember her as a foolish, unstable woman making desperate claims against a successful man.
That afternoon Bellwether's board issued a statement announcing Ryan and Adrian had been placed on administrative leave and Olivia suspended from company duties while the review continued. The statement did not determine criminal guilt or promise Emily a particular legal result, but it corrected the record by acknowledging that substantial evidence linked the collection's source materials to her independent work.

Outside the building, journalists asked Emily whether she wanted revenge, and she thought of the ruined cake, the hotel worker returning her coat, and the customers waiting in her workshop with gowns that needed fitting. She answered that she wanted attribution, fair compensation where the law supported it, accountability for wrongdoing, and a workplace where a person did not have to be someone's wealthy daughter to be heard.
Then Nora received notice that Ryan had filed an emergency petition seeking to restrict public discussion of their marital finances, and Emily recognized that he was searching for another venue in which to make her smaller. She returned to the workshop, placed her recovered mother's photograph above the cutting table, and decided she would meet that challenge through evidence too, even if the legal process demanded more courage than walking onto a runway.
