Chapter 6 - Blood in the Water

The morning sun rose over Manhattan, not with warmth, but with a harsh, gray glare that reflected off the icy surface of the East River. By 6:00 AM, the financial world had erupted into absolute pandemonium.

Every major news outlet in the Western world had picked up the story. The viral footage of Eleanor slamming the black box onto the champagne table had amassed over eighty million views overnight. Tabloids splashed screaming headlines across their front pages:

*THE NEW YORK POST:* **"THE EMERALD REVENGE: BILLIONAIRE CALLS WIFE 'FAT PIG'—SHE STRIPS HIM OF $4B EMPIRE IN 60 SECONDS!"**

*THE WALL STREET JOURNAL:* **"VANCE GLOBAL CRUMBLES: SYSTEMIC PENSION FRAUD UNCOVERED AS FOUNDER’S HEIRESS RECLAIMS CONTROL."**

*BLOOMBERG:* **"CHLOE ADAMS: FROM EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO $400M EMBEZZLEMENT FALL-GIRL."**

Inside the presidential suite of the St. Regis Hotel—the only luxury accommodation that hadn't immediately canceled Richard’s reservation due to a pre-paid corporate voucher—Richard Vance sat in an unbuttoned tuxedo shirt, his bloodshot eyes fixed on three separate television screens.

Empty bottles of scotch littered the mahogany coffee table. His phone was ringing constantly—calls from criminal defense attorneys, reporters from *The New York Times*, panicked creditors, and private jet leasing companies demanding the immediate return of their aircraft.

The door to the suite opened with a soft click.

Richard jumped up, his heart leaping into his throat. “Arthur?! Is that you?! Did you talk to the board?!”

It wasn't Arthur.

It was Chloe.

She looked like a ghost. Her designer dress was wrinkled, her makeup smeared, and she carried a single small suitcase. Her eyes were red and swollen from hours of crying.

“What are you doing here?!” Richard barked, advancing on her with clenched fists. “You shouldn’t be here! The feds are probably tracking your phone!”

“They already seized my apartment, Richard,” Chloe said, her voice hollow, devoid of any emotion. “They froze my personal checking accounts. They took my car. I went to my loft in SoHo, and there was a federal marshal standing at the door with a padlocked chain. I have forty-eight dollars in cash in my purse.”

“Then go to your parents! Go to your brother! I don’t care where you go, Chloe, just get the hell out of my sight!” Richard screamed, his veins bulging against his neck. “This is all your fault! If you had structured those Cayman accounts through the Panamanian shell like I told you to, Higgins would never have found the paper trail!”

Chloe stared at him, and for the first time, the blind admiration she had held for him for three years evaporated completely. She saw him for what he truly was: a coward who blamed everyone else for his own catastrophic arrogance.

“You told me you loved me,” she whispered, a bitter, broken smile touching her lips. “You told me Eleanor was a parasite who didn't understand your vision. You told me that once the merger went through, you’d leave her with a settlement and we’d build a real empire together.”

“I lied, you idiot!” Richard shouted, stepping into her face, spit flying from his lips. “You were a convenient signature! An ambitious, greedy little girl who wanted Birkin bags and penthouse views without doing the work! Did you really think a man of my stature would marry an assistant? You were an offshore firewall, Chloe! Nothing more!”

Chloe didn’t flinch. She simply looked at him, her eyes hardening into something dark and dangerous.

“An offshore firewall,” she repeated softly.

“Yes! Now get out!”

Chloe reached into her coat pocket. She pulled out a small, metallic silver USB drive and held it up between two fingers.

Richard froze. His eyes locked onto the drive.

“What is that?” he demanded, his voice dropping into a tense, dangerous register.

“You think I didn’t know who you were, Richard?” Chloe said, her voice eerily calm. “You think I spent three years organizing your calendar, listening to your private phone calls, and managing your offshore wire authorizations without keeping insurance?”

Richard’s face drained of color. “Give that to me.”

“Every voice recording of you instructing me to bypass the SEC reporting thresholds,” Chloe continued, stepping backward toward the door. “Every email where you ordered the transfer of money from the pension fund to pay for your luxury yacht in Monaco. It’s all here. Every single gigabyte.”

“I said, GIVE IT TO ME!” Richard roared, lunging forward with terrifying speed.

He grabbed her arm, violently twisting it behind her back, pinning her against the wall. Chloe screamed as his heavy hand wrapped around her wrist, his fingers prying at her fingers to snatch the drive.

“You think you can play games with me?!” Richard hissed into her ear, his breath hot and reeking of stale alcohol. “I built this game! I own you!”

*BANG!*

The suite door was kicked open with tremendous force.

Three men in dark suits, wearing earpieces and tactical holsters beneath their jackets, stormed into the room with weapons drawn.

“STEP AWAY FROM HER! HANDS ON YOUR HEAD! NOW!”

Richard froze, his grip on Chloe’s arm slipping. He turned slowly, looking down the barrels of three service weapons.

Behind the agents stepped Victoria Cross, accompanied by two federal marshals holding an arrest warrant printed on thick, heavy parchment.

“Mr. Vance,” Victoria said, her voice crisp and completely devoid of warmth. “Under the terms of the restraining order issued by the New York State Supreme Court thirty minutes ago, you are prohibited from approaching within five hundred feet of any former Vance Global employees, corporate officers, or material witnesses in the ongoing federal investigation.”

Victoria stepped forward and held out her open palm toward Chloe.

Chloe, gasping for breath, shoved the silver USB drive directly into Victoria’s hand.

“She’s offering full state's evidence in exchange for a proffer agreement with the Southern District,” Victoria stated, pocketing the drive with a small, satisfied nod. “Thank you for your cooperation, Ms. Adams.”

Richard looked between Chloe, Victoria, and the armed federal agents. His jaw worked, but no words came out. He was completely, irrevocably trapped.

“You’re finished, Richard,” Victoria whispered. “The board meeting starts in fifteen minutes. Eleanor is already sitting in your chair.”
