Chapter 4 - The Serpent in Silk

The cellar beneath the Moretti compound in Lake Forest was an echo chamber of suffering. Constructed in the 1930s during the height of Chicago's bootlegging wars, the walls were three feet of solid limestone, soundproofed and perpetually cold.
Vanessa Sterling sat tied to a heavy steel chair in the center of the room, her designer silk blouse torn at the shoulder, her platinum hair disheveled. Two armed guards stood motionless in the shadows behind her.
When the heavy iron door swung open, Vanessa jerked her head up. Her expression shifted rapidly from panic to calculated sweetness the moment she saw Dante stride down the concrete steps.
"Dante! Thank God!" she cried, tears spilling dramatically down her cheeks. "Your men dragged me out of my apartment like an animal! Tell them to untie me! What is the meaning of this?!"
Dante didn't answer. He walked slowly, his footsteps echoing like funeral bells. He tossed a manila folder onto the metal interrogation table in front of her.
Beside the folder, he placed the crushed patisserie box from *Le Petit Panier*, and the forensic toxicology report from Dr. Thorne.
Vanessa’s voice died in her throat. The color drained from her skin until she looked as lifeless as the concrete walls around her.
"Prostaglandin," Dante said softly, stopping six inches from her face. His voice possessed an eerie, rhythmic cadence. "You gave it to her in the raspberry tart. You waited until I was eight hundred miles away, cut off from my network, and you dosed my pregnant wife."
"Dante... no, that’s insane!" Vanessa shrieked, struggling against the heavy nylon zip-ties binding her wrists. "Elena is framing me! She knew you’d find out about her meeting with Mateo Rossi! She poisoned herself to make you pity her! She sacrificed that brat to win you back!"
SMACK!
The backhand struck with the force of a sledgehammer. Vanessa’s head whipped sideways, blood spraying from her split lip across the limestone floor. Her diamond earring snapped off, clattering into the drain.
Dante didn't look angry; he looked hollowed out, an empty shell powered entirely by retribution.
"Don't speak his name," Dante whispered, leaning down until his lips brushed her ear. "His name was Leo. He lived twelve hours. He fought for every breath while you were sunbathing on my yacht."
Vanessa spat blood onto the floor, realizing the game was over. The faux-innocent mask vanished, replaced by a twisted, venomous grin. Her eyes gleamed with raw malice.
"He was a weak, pathetic little bastard," she hissed, laughing through bloody teeth. "Just like his mother! She never belonged in your world, Dante! She was a weak, bleeding-heart painter! She would have ruined you! She was going to convince you to give up the Outfit, to surrender the family empire to the feds!"
"She was giving me my soul back," Dante said quietly.
"You never had a soul!" Vanessa spat, her voice echoing off the stone. "I made you what you are! I brought you the southern shipping lanes! I got you the connections in Washington! And what did she do? She sat in her studio crying over the blood on your hands! I did what you were too cowardly to do! I put an end to that pathetic bloodline!"
Dante stared at her for five long seconds. He didn't yell. He didn't reach for his gun.
He simply reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black remote control.
"You love power, Vanessa," Dante said calmly. "You love the Moretti name. You love the money, the penthouses, the status."
He pressed a button on the remote. An overhead projector whirred to life, casting an illuminated feed onto the limestone wall.
It showed the financial trading floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. On the screen, Vanessa’s family company—Sterling Global Logistics—was plummeting in real-time. Millions of dollars were vanishing every second as Moretti shell companies dumped billions of shares, triggering an irreversible margin call.
"What... what are you doing?" Vanessa stammered, the smirk vanishing from her face.
"By noon today, your father will be in federal custody for securities fraud and illegal narcotics transport through your family’s shipping containers," Dante explained, his tone completely flat. "Your mother’s assets have been seized by the IRS. Every property, every bank account, every offshore trust associated with the Sterling name has been incinerated."
"No... Dante, please! My father has a heart condition!"
"And you," Dante continued, stepping back toward the iron door, "will spend the rest of your natural life in a supermax facility in Indiana. Not as a federal witness. As a violent felon convicted of first-degree premeditated infanticide and corporate espionage."
"You can't prove it!" she screamed, thrashing wildly against the chair. "I have connections! I have senators in my pocket!"
"Frank found your private contractor thirty minutes ago," Dante said, his hand resting on the heavy door handle. "He gave up the encrypted text messages, the purchase orders for the prostaglandin, and the security footage of you entering Room 412. You have nothing, Vanessa. You are nothing."
"DANTE! COME BACK HERE! DANTE!"
Dante pulled the heavy steel door shut, cutting off her screams as the heavy bolt slid home with a definitive, mechanical *thud*.
He turned to Frank, who was waiting in the corridor with a satellite phone in hand.
"The tactical boats are deployed at the harbor," Frank reported. "Mateo Rossi’s yacht, *The Siren*, has just detached from the pier. Elena is on board."

Dante racked the slide of his Kimber once more. "Bring the helicopter. We intercept them at the breakwater."
