Chapter 14 - The Midnight Ultimatum

The silence that followed was suffocating. Outside, the lake groaned beneath shifting plates of ice, a sound like tearing metal.

"You're lying," I whispered, clutching my babies tighter against my chest, feeling their rapid, innocent heartbeats fluttering against my ribs. "You just want to take my son. You want to raise him to be a monster, just like you raised Dante."

"Believe whatever comforting lies you want, girl," Eleanor snapped, turning her cold gaze toward me. "The Sinclairs don't negotiate. When Julianna died, their hit squad raided her safehouse in Geneva. They didn't find the ledger. They found her diary. It detailed the trust parameters. By dawn tomorrow, every mercenary from Chicago to Montreal will know that the key to the Moretti fortune is breathing inside this wooden shack."

Harrison Vance checked his platinum Patek Philippe watch. "The court summons is served. Dante, you have thirty-six hours to present the children at the Lake Forest manor for biometric registration and protective custody. If you refuse, the local sheriff will arrive with an armed tactical unit to execute the court order."

"Get out," Dante said.

His voice wasn't loud. It wasn't frantic. It was the terrifying, dead whisper of a man who had already crossed the line from humanity into cold calculation.

Vance hesitated, instinctively stepping back. Eleanor glared at her son, her lip curling. "Don't be a fool, Dante. You cannot protect them with a hunting rifle and firewood. You are no longer the king. You're just a man with targets painted on his back."

With a rustle of sable fur and the sharp thud of her cane, Eleanor turned and swept out into the freezing night. Vance followed, pulling the heavy door shut behind them.

Seconds later, the high-beam headlights flooded the cabin one last time before the engines roared, the heavy tires churning through gravel and snow, fading into the distant highway until only the wind remained.

I slid down against the cedar wall, collapsing to the floor with Mateo and Clara in my arms, my whole body shaking uncontrollably. Dante didn't move. He stood in the center of the kitchen, staring at the blue court document on the table, his chest rising and falling in shallow, jagged breaths.

"Dante..." I sobbed, looking up at him through tears of pure exhaustion. "They’re going to take our babies."

Dante walked slowly over to me. He dropped to his knees in the dust, wrapping his massive arms around me and our twins, pulling us against his chest. But when he spoke, his voice was no longer that of the quiet carpenter who had kissed my forehead at dawn.

"No one is taking our children, Lena," he whispered against my hair, cold steel ringing beneath every syllable. "They thought I gave up my empire because I was weak. Now I have to show them what I become when I have something real to protect."
