Chapter 20 - The Detonator in the Dark

Eleanor raised her right hand. Clutched in her leather glove was an industrial remote detonator, its digital counter glowing with an amber digital readout: *00:03:00*.
Three minutes.
"You brought the police. You brought Marcus Reed. You turned Margaret House into a circus of public redemption," Eleanor purred, taking a step forward while her guards raised their weapons. "Did you really think I spent twenty years eating through concrete just to let you hand my inheritance to stray maids and broken housewives?"
"Take the money!" Vanessa screamed, stepping out from behind Claire. "Take the trust! Take the offshore accounts, take the name—we don't want it! Just let us walk out of here!"
"You don't get to walk away, Vanessa," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a lethal, venomous whisper. "You lived the life that was stolen from me. You wore the diamonds. You danced under the chandeliers while I drank recycled water from a rusted pipe."
Behind them, the reinforced steel door of the underground ward slammed shut with a deafening hydraulic hiss. The locking bolts engaged with a heavy, final *thud*.
The digital screen on the keypad flashed red: *CONTAINMENT LOCKDOWN INITIATED.*
From the ceiling above, the muffled vibration of heavy explosions rattled the foundation. The ceiling cracked, showering concrete dust over their heads. Margaret House above was collapsing.
"Marcus..." Claire breathed, panic seizing her throat.
Eleanor pressed the toggle switch on the detonator. The timer dropped instantly to sixty seconds, a high-pitched electronic whine filling the subterranean bunker.
"There is one escape pod built into the river tunnel," Eleanor said, tossing a single key marked *417-FINAL* onto the blood-stained floor between Claire and Vanessa. "It holds exactly one person. One sister survives the Whitmore curse. The other burns with the secrets."

Eleanor leveled a silenced pistol directly at Claire's forehead.
"Now," Eleanor whispered, her finger tightening against the trigger as the timer beeped down to forty-five seconds. "Choose."
