Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN THE ARCHIVE

Miriam Bell agreed to meet only after Priya arranged a conference room at a legal aid office and two neutral staff members confirmed her identity, a cautious beginning that disappointed Isabella until she remembered how many years silence had been maintained by making ordinary people afraid of consequences.

Miriam was seventy-one, with silver hair tied in a low braid and a canvas bag containing folders she had organized by year, and she sat across from Isabella with the weary expression of someone who had rehearsed a confession many times without deciding whom she could trust.

She explained that Daniel Bennett had delivered maintenance records showing Riverside Terrace's emergency lighting failed several tests, and she had received them because her department maintained the city's archive of building complaints.

An executive override had later appeared in the electronic case file, closing the repairs as complete, but Miriam had retained paper correspondence proving Daniel continued reporting outages for weeks after that supposed resolution.

She had tried to challenge the discrepancy, only to be reassigned during a department reorganization and warned by a supervisor that she could lose her pension if she made unsupported allegations against a major developer.

“I didn't invent the report,” Miriam said, “but I let them bury it, and I thought if I kept a copy I could someday repair what I allowed to happen.”

Isabella did not rush to comfort her, because the point of the meeting was not to make any adult feel innocent; she asked how the original override had been authorized and whether Miriam could distinguish the person who entered it from the person whose name appeared on the screen.

Miriam handed Priya certified records showing Victor Shaw requested the closure on behalf of Vale Development, while the actual changes were entered by a municipal contractor whose employer had received payments from Northbank Advisory.

The documents showed an overlap of people and dates but did not yet prove an agreement to falsify inspections, and Priya carefully separated what the records established from what they made plausible.

Miriam also recalled a younger attorney named Malcolm Price accompanying Victor to the archive, asking for Daniel's originals and telling her that copies held outside the official repository would be treated as stolen government material.

That assertion had terrified Miriam enough to stop communicating with Daniel, and she had carried the memory ever since receiving news of his death from a neighborhood newsletter rather than from the man she should have called back.

When Isabella asked how Miriam's name reached the hotel guest list, the older woman shook her head and said she had received a formal invitation purportedly from Mercer's acquisition team, offering to resolve her concerns discreetly if she met a representative in the lounge that evening.

She had arrived early but never gone upstairs because a caller claiming to work for Adrian told her to leave immediately, warning that Isabella was there to discredit her and reopen questions about the pension she had protected.

The caller knew the exact name of her former supervisor and described the letter she had hidden in her kitchen drawer, details that persuaded her the threat came from someone with access to old files.

Gabriel realized that Miriam's invitation and Isabella's temporary work assignment had been known to people preparing the event, although how Adrian had connected them remained uncertain until the hotel produced a schedule of staffing changes requested by Victor's event coordinator.

Isabella's shift had been moved from an ordinary banquet to the exclusive lounge at the specific request of a guest liaison, whose handwritten note described her as a suitable face for the party because Adrian knew her personally.

The note was initialed by Victor, but the liaison insisted she had never understood the purpose of the reassignment and said the instruction came as part of a list of preferences from the person paying for the event.

The humiliation was beginning to look less like a spontaneous eruption of Adrian's cruelty and more like a deliberate stage on which his old power over Isabella could be displayed before men whose approval he needed for the rescue loan.

Yet Isabella found that explanation incomplete, because coercing a waitress would not repair fraudulent inspection documents or secure the financing, and she suspected the spectacle had been intended to distract someone from another meeting.

Priya asked Miriam whether she had brought records to the hotel, and the older woman confessed she had carried a flash drive holding scans of the city's old correspondence, intending to hand it to Gabriel's independent compliance team if she could verify whom to trust.

When Miriam returned home that night the drive was gone from her bag, though she could not say whether it had been stolen at the hotel or misplaced earlier while she traveled.

The discovery changed Isabella's understanding of Victor's watch-checking and his meeting with the hotel contractor, and she wondered whether the assault had been a noisy diversion while someone searched for the archive evidence.

Police were informed, but Priya cautioned against presenting the theory as fact, since a missing drive could be lost rather than stolen and security footage did not capture anyone removing it.

Miriam quietly produced a second storage device from a zipped compartment of her bag, explaining that Daniel's caution had taught her never to keep the only copy of anything that powerful people wanted erased.

The second copy had been given to a records preservation charity months before the gala, and its contents could now be authenticated against the paper originals without relying on anyone's unverifiable account.

When Isabella asked why Miriam had finally come forward, the older woman turned her gaze to a photo of Mateo Ortiz in a rehabilitation clinic and said every year of waiting had made the truth harder to speak, not less necessary.

That evening, the independent accounting team found that Northbank Advisory had used a subsidiary named Glasswell Services to issue invoices for consulting work that nobody at Vale Development could describe in concrete terms.

The same subsidiary paid a contractor with ties to the hotel booking, and Gabriel received a note that the company was now trying to withdraw its financing application before its underlying records could be examined.

A withdrawn application would not erase existing evidence, Priya explained, but the review had reached a point where regulators and law enforcement needed to determine whether the paperwork supported formal action.

Isabella looked at her father's service notebook resting beneath a protective cover and understood why he had preserved such ordinary pages: dates, signatures, and repeated repair requests could outlast intimidation because they described things that had actually happened.

Then Miriam pointed to a photograph of the basement electrical room taken before the supposed repair, and Isabella saw a small figure in the reflection of a metal cabinet, wearing a burgundy tie identical to the one Adrian had worn during their final argument.

She could not identify the face, but beneath the photograph Daniel had written a single name with a question mark, and that name was not Adrian's or Victor's.

MALCOLM PRICE?
