Chapter 5 - Ghosts in the Paperwork

The name hung in the cold air of the grand foyer like a toxic vapor.
*Thomas Sterling.*
To the younger guests and the press, the name meant nothing. But to the older Wall Street titans in the room—men who had traded alongside Arthur Sterling in the brutal takeover battles of the late 1990s—the name was an explosive charge detonating beneath their feet.
Arthur’s cane trembled against the floor. Victoria rushed to her father’s side, gripping his arm tightly, alarmed by the sudden spike in his pulse.
“Dad?” Victoria asked, her voice tight with concern. “Who is Thomas Sterling? Why does he share our name?”
Arthur did not answer immediately. He looked at Eleanor, his gaze burning with a mixture of profound grief and absolute disgust.
“Thomas,” Arthur whispered, his voice hoarse, shaking with memories buried for decades. “My younger brother. The brother who tried to embezzle sixty million dollars from our maritime shipping division fifteen years ago. The brother who swore he would burn my life to the ground after I had him indicted.”
Arthur turned his eyes back toward the gathered crowd. “Fifteen years ago, Thomas’s yacht exploded off the coast of Marseille. The French authorities found wreckage, dental fragments, and pronounced him dead. It was all a lie. He faked his own death.”
Arthur stepped closer to Eleanor, his cane striking the marble with rhythmic fury.
“And you,” Arthur rasped, his voice dropping an octave into pure, unadulterated venom. “You weren’t a lonely widow when I met you at that charity gala in Geneva five years ago, were you Eleanor? You were his creature. You were planted in my life from the very beginning.”
Eleanor’s breathing came in shallow, frantic gasps. She backed away toward the fireplace, bumping into a silver tray held by a terrified waiter. Crystal glasses crashed to the floor, shattering into hundreds of glittering shards.
“Arthur... listen to me...” Eleanor pleaded, her voice trembling, stripping away the last remnants of her aristocratic poise. “You don't understand... I had no choice! Thomas... Thomas had debts! He held mortgages over my family’s properties in France! He promised me that if I helped him secure the blind trust, no one would get hurt!”
“No one would get hurt?” Victoria stepped forward, her voice slicing through Eleanor’s excuses like a scalpel. “You were poisoning my father for four months! You gave him micro-doses of cardiac glycosides until his vascular system collapsed! Dr. Reynolds found the chemical footprint, Eleanor. You didn’t just want the money. You and Thomas wanted him dead so the Prometheus Trust could execute its complete takeover without a trial!”
Julian, seeing his mother disintegrating under the interrogation, lunged toward the table to snatch the folder.
*“DON’T TOUCH THAT!”* Special Agent Miller shouted, moving with lightning speed. He intercepted Julian, grabbing the young man’s wrist in a brutal compliance lock, twisting his arm behind his back and slamming him facedown onto the cold marble floor.
*THWACK!*
“Julian!” Eleanor shrieked.
“Federal evidence, Mr. Vance,” Agent Miller barked into Julian’s ear, pulling out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. “Tampering with federal documentation carries a mandatory five-year enhancement. Don't make this night worse for yourself than it already is.”
*Click-clack.*
The cuffs locked around Julian’s wrists with brutal finality.
Victoria didn’t even look at Julian. Her entire focus was on the financial blueprint laid out in the folder.
As a forensic investigator, the pieces were rapidly assembling inside her mind. Thomas Sterling hadn’t just wanted to steal the family fortune; he had structured the Prometheus Trust through a series of offshore holding companies in Liechtenstein and Panama. By using Eleanor as the domestic trustee, Thomas remained entirely invisible to American regulatory agencies. Once Arthur was dead and Eleanor held forty-nine percent, Thomas could execute a corporate squeeze-out, liquidate the domestic shipping ports, and siphon billions into untraceable cryptocurrency protocols and private Swiss vault accounts.
It was the perfect corporate murder.
Except for one fatal oversight: they hadn’t anticipated that Arthur’s daughter possessed the exact clearance and technical skills needed to track every ghost in their paperwork.
“Marcus,” Victoria said without looking back. “Notify the Southern District. I want an immediate Red Notice issued through Interpol for Thomas Sterling. Target all known aliases, private aviation flight plans leaving Western Europe, and freeze every SWIFT transaction linked to the Prometheus Trust’s transit accounts in Zurich.”
“Already underway,” Kane replied, tapping rapidly on his smartphone.
Eleanor collapsed to her knees among the shattered champagne glasses, her emerald gown soaking up spilled vintage wine. Her hands shook uncontrollably as she looked up at the man she had tried to destroy.
“Arthur... please...” Eleanor wept. “He’s coming here! Thomas is already in New York! He’s at the Plaza! If you don't sign the voluntary release, he will destroy everything! He has contacts that can erase your entire shipping fleet overnight!”
Arthur looked down at the woman who had shared his bed, who had smiled at him while handing him poisoned cups of tea, who had thrown him into a snowstorm to freeze to death.
There was no pity left in his eyes. There was only the cold, unyielding iron of a titan who had reclaimed his throne.

“Let him come,” Arthur said softly. “Let my brother come and face what he created.”
