Chapter 8 - The Paper Fortress

By 6:00 AM, the Fifth Precinct had transformed into a command center.
The discovery of the hospice footage escalated the case from a domestic child-abuse investigation into a capital murder and multi-jurisdictional serial financial fraud inquiry. Detective Miller contacted the State Bureau of Investigation, the District Attorney’s Special Victims Unit, and the homicide division.
Vanessa Vance was being held in an interrogation cell on the third floor. She still wore her cashmere cardigan, though it was now wrinkled and stained with coffee. Her lawyer, a high-priced criminal defense attorney named Bradley Sterling whom she had retained using a retainer drawn from Lily’s compromised trust account, sat beside her.
“My client has nothing to say,” Sterling announced, tapping his pen on the steel table. “The video footage seized from the home was obtained without a specific search warrant for closed digital servers, violating her fourth amendment rights. Furthermore, the altercation in the kitchen was an instance of parental disciplinary correction that was violently interrupted by an unhinged, trespasser grandmother.”
Detective Miller walked into the interrogation room, carrying a thick binder of forensic documents. He didn't sit down. He tossed the binder onto the table, right between Vanessa and her attorney.
“Page twelve, counselor,” Miller said calmly.
Sterling frowned, flipping the binder open. His eyes widened slightly.
“That is the chemical analysis from Children’s Mercy Hospital,” Miller said, leaning over the table, staring directly into Vanessa’s cold, unblinking eyes. “Lily Vance has high concentrations of Clonazepam in her blood. Leo Vance has trace sedatives in his system. And Mark Vance’s blood panel just came back with lethal levels of Scopolamine and Diazepam.”
Vanessa’s lips twitched, but she remained silent.
“Page twenty-four,” Miller continued, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. “That is the forensic audit from Arthur Vance’s firm. We obtained an emergency subpoena at 4:30 AM. We tracked the $340,000 you drained from Lily’s trust directly into your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under your maiden name, Croft.”
Sterling cleared his throat, leaning toward Vanessa. “Vanessa, do not speak.”
“And page forty,” Miller slammed his hand down onto the open page. “That is the time-stamped digital footage from October 22nd, two years ago. The master bedroom. The intravenous injection of potassium chloride into Elena Vance’s central line.”
At those words, the absolute composure on Vanessa’s face cracked.
Her pupils constricted into pinpricks. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her skin looking like curdled milk.
“The search warrant we executed on the wall cavity was fully covered under the emergency exigent-circumstances doctrine regarding an imminent threat to child welfare,” Miller said, smiling coldly. “The warrant judge signed off on the full digital scope twenty minutes ago. It’s all admissible, Vanessa. Every single frame.”
Sterling stared at the medical report and the video still of the syringe entering Elena’s line. The attorney slowly closed the binder, pushed his chair back from the table, and looked at his client with naked horror.
“Detective,” Sterling said, his voice completely altered. “I am stepping down as counsel of record due to an irreconcilable conflict of interest regarding financial fraud involving my legal retainer.”
“Sterling! What are you doing?!” Vanessa hissed, her voice finally losing its velvet mask, revealing the screeching, feral monster beneath. “I hired you!”
“You paid me with stolen money from an orphaned child’s trust, Mrs. Vance,” Sterling replied, standing up and gathering his briefcase. “You are on your own.”
The door clicked shut behind the attorney.
Vanessa was left alone in the room with Detective Miller. The mask was completely gone now. Her lips peeled back in a vicious snarl.
“He was weak!” she spat, her voice shaking with unbridled malice. “Mark Vance was a pathetic, broken shell of a man! He couldn't even change a diaper without crying for his dead wife! I built that house! I kept that family alive! That little brat Lily was a parasite eating away at his life! She deserved everything she got!”
“Save it for the grand jury,” Miller said, turning his back on her as two state troopers entered with heavy metal shackles. “Vanessa Croft, you are under arrest for the first-degree murder of Elena Vance, attempted murder, felony child abuse, and grand larceny.”
As the iron cuffs clicked around her wrists, Vanessa lunged forward, screaming obscenities, thrashing against the officers until they forced her face-down onto the table.
