Chapter 4 - WHY CELESTE CHOSE SOPHIE

Celeste Morgan had not begun the relationship planning to terrorize a three-year-old.

That truth mattered because evil stories are easiest when everyone starts evil.

Real deterioration is usually slower.

She met Alexander at a museum benefit.

He was widowed.

Distant.

She liked that he did not flatter her family name.

They dated carefully.

Sophie initially liked her.

Pictures showed.

Ice cream.

Zoo.

Bedtime books.

Celeste had not always frightened the child.

Then engagement.

Howard Morgan began advising.

“Being Alexander’s wife is not enough.”

Celeste laughed.

“What does that mean?”

“He will always put that child first.”

“She’s his daughter.”

“Exactly.”

Howard believed spouses compete with children for influence.

Toxic.

He told Celeste:

“If Sophie trusts you, you become indispensable. If she rejects you, Alexander will eventually blame you.”

Celeste became anxious.

Sophie’s ordinary toddler behavior felt like evaluation.

“No.”

Tantrum.

Want Daddy.

Want Aunt Julia.

Celeste interpreted as rejection.

Howard suggested structure.

Graham supplied family-continuity legal ideas.

Edward smoothed administration.

Then Celeste began controlling.

No dessert if Sophie asked for Daddy.

No calling Julia without permission.

Nighttime threats.

Why?

She wanted compliance that looked like attachment.

She wanted Sophie to run to her in front of Alexander.

Instead Sophie withdrew.

That made Celeste harsher.

Cycle.

When Elena refused to praise her, Celeste panicked.

She needed witness.

Because Project Cedar documents already described her as stable caregiving figure.

If household staff contradicted, plan weak.

Thus bedroom threat.

Did Howard tell her to frighten Sophie?

No direct.

He told her:

Children adjust when choices narrow.

She chose methods.

Responsibility hers.

At engagement party downstairs, Celeste thought Alexander had forgiven because he told her to smile.

She returned to guests.

Howard was there.

Graham.

Edward.

All.

Security quietly monitored.

Alexander remained upstairs with Sophie until Julia took her to secured wing.

Then he came down.

He smiled enough.

Guests saw nothing.

Celeste approached.

“You okay?”

Alexander looked at her.

“Perfect.”

The word frightened Elena when she heard later.

Alexander hated deception.

But he needed time.

At 9:15, Marcus reported Howard entered library with Graham and Edward.

Celeste joined.

Security camera outside.

Audio? Mansion common areas security did not record private room audio due privacy. But access logs.

They stayed forty minutes.

What did they discuss?

Alexander could not know.

Then Graham left carrying document folder.

Security tailed legally on property? They observed exit.

Naomi arranged preservation notices before midnight.

Outside counsel sent to Graham’s firm and family office requiring no destruction.

At 12:03 a.m., Graham attempted to delete Project Cedar folder from firm cloud.

IT journal captured.

Obstruction.

Now evidence.

Edward logged into family office and tried to revoke two scheduled payments.

Why?

Evergreen and legal consultant.

Not destroy but conceal? Metadata.

Marcus froze credentials.

Celeste texted Howard:

He knows something.

Howard:

About upstairs?

Celeste:

Maybe.

Howard:

Stay calm. Wedding still gives you leverage.

That message became decisive.

At 12:14:

Celeste:

He told me to go back to party. Why?

Howard:

Because he does not want scandal.

Celeste believed.

At 12:22:

Howard:

Tomorrow get continuity authorization signed. Do not discuss child placement.

There.

Still proceeding.

Alexander ended party at midnight.

He did not confront publicly.

He told Celeste he needed early meeting and she should stay guest wing.

Security ensured Sophie separate.

Next morning, police and outside counsel arrived.

Why police?

Elena filed complaint for assault/threat.

Alexander supported.

Celeste was interviewed.

Not arrested immediately? She had gripped/pressed maid, threatened, child intimidation. Could lead. Officers documented.

Then Naomi served notice of civil emergency petition regarding trust interference.

Graham received professional conduct notice.

Edward suspended.

Howard's lawyers called.

Now secrecy broke.

Celeste realized.

She went to Alexander’s study.

“You set me up.”

Alexander looked.

“I heard you threaten my daughter.”

“You told me to go downstairs.”

“So you wouldn’t destroy evidence.”

Her face changed.

“You used me.”

“No.”

He answered:

“I stopped protecting you from the consequences of your own decisions.”

Celeste cried.

“I loved you.”

Alexander believed she did.

That made no difference to Sophie’s safety.

“You frightened a three-year-old.”

“I was trying to make her accept me.”

“You told her I would send her away.”

“She kept saying you loved her mother more.”

“She is three.”

Silence.

Then Alexander asked:

“Did your father tell you to do that?”

“No.”

“Did Graham?”

“No.”

“Edward?”

“No.”

“Then whose choice was it?”

Celeste broke.

“Mine.”

Good.

No diffusion.

Then:

“Did you plan to send Sophie to Evergreen?”

Celeste hesitated.

“Temporarily.”

“Why?”

“To help her adjust.”

“To what?”

“Our marriage.”

Alexander stared.

“You planned to remove my daughter from her home so she could adjust to you entering it?”

Celeste heard the absurdity.

Howard’s language had become hers.

“She was becoming impossible.”

“She was afraid of you.”

Celeste cried.

“I know.”

That admission ended any path back.

Alexander removed engagement ring from his pocket? He wasn't wearing hers. He could say:

“The wedding is canceled.”

Celeste closed eyes.

“Because of Sophie?”

“Because of what you did.”

Important.

Sophie not burden.

He did not say daughter “caused” cancellation.

Celeste was escorted from mansion after collecting essentials under supervision.

No dramatic throwing.

No violence.

Legal process.

Howard waited outside in car.

Celeste looked back once.

Alexander did not.

He went upstairs to tell Sophie:

“Celeste won’t live here anymore.”

Sophie asked:

“Because I told?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because grown-ups have rules too, and she broke important ones.”

Child-sized truth.

Sophie thought.

Then:

“Can Elena stay?”

Alexander smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

If Elena wants.

Agency for worker too.

Elena chose to remain temporarily, later with raise and independent reporting access.

No forced savior relationship.

The wedding ended.

The investigation had only begun.

Celeste’s own therapist later documented a pattern that helped explain, without excusing, her behavior. She had grown up in a household where approval followed performance. Howard praised the child who represented the family well and withdrew warmth when embarrassed. As an adult, Celeste treated Sophie’s affection as an evaluation of whether she was succeeding at becoming Mrs. Vale. A toddler saying “I want Daddy” landed in her mind as public rejection. She responded by trying to force the appearance of attachment. The harder she pushed, the more Sophie feared her. The more Sophie feared her, the more Celeste believed stronger control was necessary. By the time Elena challenged her, Celeste was defending an image that had already become incompatible with care.
