Chapter 5 - Cornered Beasts

The words hung in the air of the high-rise penthouse like a toxic mist.

"Ambushed?" Alexander’s voice was dangerously calm, the kind of quiet that precedes an artillery strike. "Explain."

"Two blacked-out heavy-duty utility trucks pinned the federal transport van against the concrete barrier near the 34th Street exit," David explained, pulling a tactical tablet from his belt and swiping through live traffic camera feeds. "Smoke grenades were deployed. Four armed operatives in tactical gear breached the rear doors of the van. The two federal marshals were incapacitated with stun batons—no casualties, but they're unconscious. Marcus Vance was left behind in the van, terrified out of his skin. But Victor Sterling was extracted into a secondary vehicle. A gray Audi RS7 heading north toward Westchester."

Claire rose from the couch, her hands trembling. "He escaped? How could he escape federal custody in the middle of Manhattan?"

"He didn't escape custody, Claire," Alexander replied, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed the screen. "He was silenced. Or rather, he's about to be."

David nodded in agreement. "Vance’s private security contractors. Victor was the primary link connecting the laundering operations at *Le Miroir* directly to Senator Vance’s campaign accounts. Marcus is a terrified idiot who only knows about the restaurant's cash drops. But Victor knows account numbers, offshore shell trustees, and safe deposit locations. Vance can’t afford to let Victor reach an interrogation room with federal prosecutors."

Alexander turned to David. "Where is the Audi going?"

"Traffic cams lost them entering the private airfield near White Plains," David said. "Senator Vance owns a corporate hangar there through an LLC. A Gulfstream G550 is currently warming up on the tarmac, filed for a private flight plan to Grand Cayman."

"They're executing him," Claire whispered, the horror dawning on her. "They're going to put him on a plane, make him sign over his assets, and disappear him."

"No," Alexander said, his eyes blazing with tactical calculation. "They're going to use him to destroy the physical evidence before they leave the country."

Alexander grabbed his overcoat from the chair. "Claire, the ledger you gave me has the domestic routing keys. But where is the encryption drive for the Cayman accounts? Victor wouldn't keep the digital cryptographic tokens in the restaurant cellar."

Claire’s eyes widened as her memory clicked into place.

"The clock," she gasped.

Alexander stopped. "What clock?"

"In Victor’s private penthouse apartment above the restaurant," Claire said rapidly. "Last month, I had to bring up a catering invoice for him to sign while he was entertaining a private client. He had an antique grandfather clock from the 18th century in the foyer. I saw him slide a panel on the side of the wooden casing to store a titanium hardware wallet and three blue ledgers. He said to the client, *'If the feds ever come, this clock burns first.'*"

Alexander turned to David. "They aren't going to White Plains. The airfield is a diversion."

David checked his comms. "Sir?"

"The extraction team didn't take Victor to run away," Alexander deduced with terrifying precision. "Victor won't leave the country without his escape fund. He has over forty million dollars in bearer bonds and encrypted cryptocurrency stored in that penthouse. And Senator Vance needs that data destroyed before the FBI gets a residential search warrant signed at midnight."

Alexander looked at Claire. "They’re going back to *Le Miroir*."

"The restaurant is crawling with police!" Claire said.

"The restaurant is," Alexander countered. "But the private residential tower attached to the rear has a separate subterranean elevator accessible through the loading dock. Victor built that escape route five years ago. Agent Wright and his team are currently securing the dining room; they don't have the warrant for the private residence yet. It takes three hours to get an emergency federal warrant for a residential property at night."

Alexander reached into a concealed drawer beneath his desk, pulling out a sleek, matte-black Glock 19. He checked the magazine with a sharp, metallic snap and holstered it beneath his suit jacket.

"Alexander, wait," Claire said, stepping toward him, her heart hammering against her ribs. "You can't go there alone. That’s suicide. Let the FBI handle it!"

"The FBI is bound by federal procedure, Claire," Alexander said, turning to look at her. "By the time the magistrate signs that warrant, Victor will have torched the penthouse, retrieved his keys, and crossed the state line. If that evidence burns, your father’s name stays blackened forever. Vance walks away clean. And you and your mother will spend the rest of your lives looking over your shoulders."

He extended his hand toward her.

"I won't let them take your father’s justice away a second time. Come with me, or stay here under David’s protection. The choice is yours."

Claire looked at the scarred leather notebook on the table. She thought of her mother, breathing through a machine in a cramped apartment. She thought of her father, dying alone in a hospital room, broken by lies.

She didn't hesitate.

She stepped forward and took Alexander’s hand.
