Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The boardroom was dead quiet, save for the ragged, shallow breathing of Daniel Vance.
Madison sat rigid in her leather chair. For the first time since Evelyn had met her, the veneer of high-society glamour had completely shattered. The sharp, untouchable strategist was gone. In her seat sat a cornered animal, realizing the steel jaws of the trap had snapped shut around its leg.
“Evelyn,” Madison began, her voice dropping into a desperate, hurried cadence. She leaned across the table, her hands clasped together as if in prayer. “Evelyn, listen to me. Daniel... Daniel lied to you. He lied to both of us. He came to me months ago, saying he needed money to cover massive gambling debts in Las Vegas. He was the one who planned the Montrose sale! I was just trying to protect what was left of the family assets!”
Daniel looked up, his red-rimmed eyes wide with absolute, disbelieving horror. “Madison?! How can you sit there and say that?! You met with the doctor! You drafted the Cayman transfer!”
“Shut up, Daniel!” Madison hissed, not even looking at him. “Evelyn, you know how weak your son is! You raised him! You know he doesn't have the stomach for business! He was going to drag Vance Continental into bankruptcy! I did what I had to do to preserve the estate!”
Evelyn slowly shook her silver head. A look of profound, almost tragic pity settled into her eyes.
“Madison,” Evelyn said, her voice smooth and low. “The tragedy of a narcissist is that you truly believe everyone else is as blind as you are arrogant.”
Marcus Cole pressed another button on his terminal.
A new document appeared on the main screen: a formal indictment notification from the United States Internal Revenue Service and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
“This is a Federal wire fraud and identity theft referral,” Arthur Sterling explained, leaning forward. “Yesterday morning, Marcus turned over the full digital forensics of M&D Horizon Ventures to the Department of Justice. The forged notary seal on the Montrose deed? Traced directly to your personal IP address at the Cherry Hills residence, Madison. The digital signature software license was purchased using your personal Macy’s credit card.”
Madison’s breath hitched in her throat. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
“Furthermore,” Arthur continued, his voice devoid of mercy, “the Grand Cayman authorities have already frozen the shell account containing the three hundred thousand dollars you embezzled from the joint household account. Under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, those funds have been repatriated to the Vance Trust. You are completely, utterly destitute, Mrs. Vance.”
“No...” Madison whispered, shaking her head frantically. “No, no, you can’t do this. I’m family! Daniel is your son!”
“You are not family,” Evelyn said, her voice cutting through Madison’s hysteria like an executioner’s axe. “You were an infection. And today, the fever breaks.”
The double doors of the boardroom opened once more.
Two uniformed federal marshals stepped into the room, accompanied by an agent from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
“Madison Vance?” the lead agent asked, producing a laminated badge and a set of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by the Denver District Court for grand larceny, criminal forgery, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Stand up and place your hands behind your back.”
Madison scrambled backward out of her chair, knocking it over with a loud crash. “Daniel! Daniel, do something! Call my father! Call someone!”
Daniel didn't move. He sat frozen, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table, completely detached from reality.
The marshals stepped forward, efficiently securing Madison’s wrists behind her back. As the cold steel clicked shut around her wrists, Madison let out a piercing shriek of rage and terror. She struggled against the officers, her heels kicking uselessly against the plush carpet as they dragged her toward the exit.
“You’ll die alone, Evelyn!” Madison screamed, her voice echoing down the executive corridor. “You hear me?! You’re an old woman who will die alone in that mountain house! Daniel hates you! He will always hate you!”
The heavy doors clicked shut.
Her screams faded into the distance.
May you like
And then, there was only Daniel.
