Chapter 5 - The Stolen Embryo & The Genetic Audit

The pungent smell of burning electrical insulation was already drifting up through the ventilation ducts when Sarah and Detective Miller reached the stairwell landing.
Down in the sub-basement of the hospital, where the massive central mainframe servers hummed beneath layers of concrete and climate-controlled cooling systems, an alarm was wailing with rhythmic, deafening brutality. Halon gas suppression warnings flashed amber against the reinforced steel blast doors.
Miller drew her Glock 19, her back pressed against the concrete wall as she descended the final flight of steps. "Jenkins, stay behind me. If this is an armed cleanup crew, your scrubs won't stop a nine-millimeter."
"I know this basement better than you do, Detective," Sarah whispered back, her breath steady, her fingers gripping a heavy metal halligan bar she had pulled from the emergency fire cabinet on the fourth floor. "And the digital backups for the VIP obstetrics suite aren't just on the server. There’s a physical optical-drive vault in the pathology lab around that corner."
Miller moved like water, slicing through the smoke-filled corridor. At the end of the hall, the reinforced door to Server Room B hung open, its electronic magnetic lock sparking where it had been sheared apart by an industrial hydraulic spreader. Inside, a figure dressed in high-grade private security fatigues was systematically pulling hard drive caddies from the central server rack, dropping them into an insulated, fireproof chemical destruction bag.
"NYPD! Drop the bag and put your hands on your head!" Miller roared, stepping into the doorway with her weapon leveled dead-center at the intruder's chest.
The man didn't hesitate. He swung a heavy titanium pry bar horizontally toward Miller’s head.
Miller ducked beneath the arc with practiced efficiency, closing the distance and delivering a brutal palm strike directly into the operative’s sternum. The man gasped, stumbling back into the server rack, but he was heavily built and trained in close-quarters combat. He lunged again, tackling Miller to the floor. The Glock skittered across the concrete, sliding beneath a bank of humming power generators.
The operative pulled a combat knife from his tactical vest, pinning Miller’s left arm with his knee, raising the blade with lethal intent.
*CLANG!*
A deafening metallic impact resonated through the room. The operative’s head snapped sideways as Sarah Jenkins drove the flat side of the heavy halligan bar directly into the side of his tactical helmet. The man groaned, dazed, his balance wavering.
Miller didn't waste the second chance. She brought her right knee up into the man’s groin, twisted out from beneath his weight, and wrapped her forearm around his carotid artery in a textbook rear-naked chokehold. Within six seconds, the operative’s eyes rolled back, and his heavy frame went completely limp on the floor.
Miller exhaled a sharp breath, wiping a smudge of soot from her forehead, and retrieved her firearm from beneath the generator. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, Nurse Jenkins."
"I took four years of trauma self-defense," Sarah said, resting the heavy iron tool on her shoulder. "Plus, he was messing with my patient records."
Sarah immediately knelt beside the discarded hard drive bag. She pulled out the third drive from the left—the label read: *ARCHIVE OB-GYN: CRYOGENIC & EMBRYO TRACKING — CONFIDENTIAL.*
"Miller, look at this," Sarah said, pointing her flashlight at the digital log taped to the back of the drive sleeve. "This isn't just about Claire’s current pregnancy. This is the master ledger from the private Van Dorn fertility procedures conducted here six months ago."
Miller leaned down, her eyes scanning the microscopic print. "What does it say?"
"Claire didn't just conceive naturally," Sarah whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs as she decoded the medical terminology. "Ethan brought her here for what she was told was a routine hormonal therapy and intrauterine insemination. But Ethan didn't use an anonymous donor, and he certainly didn't use his own sperm."
"Then whose genetic material did he use?"
Sarah looked up, her face completely pale under the emergency strobe lights. "William Van Dorn’s."
The revelation struck the concrete room like an artillery shell.
"Ethan knew about the will," Sarah explained, her voice trembling with disgust. "He knew William had frozen viable genetic samples at this hospital prior to his experimental cardiac surgery eighteen months ago. Ethan bribed Dr. Vance and the rogue laboratory technicians to steal William’s frozen genetic material and use it to fertilize Claire’s ovum without her knowledge!"
"Jesus Christ," Miller breathed, horror washing over her hardened features. "He had his own wife impregnated with his father's biological child."
"Yes," Sarah said, her voice rising in sickening realization. "Ethan thought that by having Claire carry William’s biological child, the baby would pass William’s post-mortem DNA audit with flying colors! He thought he could claim the baby as his own, present it to the court, satisfy William’s bloodline clause, and secure the seven-point-eight-billion-dollar trust!"
"Then why try to kill the baby now?" Miller demanded. "Why the cut brake lines? Why the forced abortion and the psychiatric asylum?"
Sarah pointed to the final line of the encrypted digital log, where a red administrative warning was stamped across the electronic file:
*FAILED MATCH: CHROMOSOMAL DEGRADATION DETECTED. PRE-NATAL MATERNAL CELL FRACTION REVEALS CARRIER STATUS FOR FATAL NEURO-DEGENERATIVE ANOMALY EXCLUSIVE TO MARGARET VAN DORN’S MATERNAL BLOODLINE.*
Sarah looked at Miller with cold, devastating clarity.

"Because the test they secretly ran last week revealed something Ethan never anticipated," Sarah said. "The baby wasn't just William’s biological child. The genetic material Margaret used forty years ago to conceive Ethan didn't come from an anonymous donor in Europe. Margaret used her own biological brother's genetic material to keep the money strictly within her own family line. Ethan is the product of incest. And the baby Claire is carrying inside her right now possesses the catastrophic, undeniable genetic markers that prove the entire Van Dorn family tree is a web of criminal, biological fraud."
