Chapter 8 - Unearthing Julian's Legacy

The following morning, forensic teams executed a search warrant on Julianne Vance’s law offices in downtown Princeton, as well as her private residence in Hopewell.
What they uncovered was a sprawling, decade-long enterprise of legal predation.
Julianne had not only targeted my family. Over the course of twelve years as an elite probate attorney, she had systematically altered wills, forged living trusts, and drained the accounts of over fourteen wealthy estates whose primary beneficiaries were elderly widows or minor children. She had accumulated over eighteen million dollars in hidden offshore holdings, using Derek’s struggling freight business as a money-laundering conduit to move the stolen capital into legitimate domestic investments.
At 11:00 AM, Detective Lin met me at the precinct's private family room. Toby was sitting on the carpet, coloring a picture of a superhero with a box of crayons an officer had given him.
"Mrs. Hollister," Detective Lin said, handing me a certified folder from the State Attorney General’s office. "I think you need to see this."
I opened the folder. Inside was a verified inventory of Julian’s original trust, along with documents recovered from Julianne’s private safe.
"When Julian suspected Julianne was embezzling from him five years ago, he didn't just threaten to report her," Detective Lin explained. "He hired an independent forensic auditor in New York. Julian knew that if something happened to him, Julianne might try to intercept the estate. So he created a secondary, encrypted trust with an institutional bank in Switzerland, completely outside the jurisdiction of Julianne’s law firm."
I looked up at her, stunned. "Julian knew?"
"He didn't know she was planning to murder him," Detective Lin corrected gently. "He thought she was just an ambitious thief. But he placed a fail-safe in the trust. If the primary domestic account showed unauthorized liquidations or if Toby's primary legal custody was ever challenged in court, an automatic freeze would trigger across all accounts, and the Swiss firm would notify federal authorities."
"The flash drive," I whispered, the final puzzle piece locking into place.
"Exactly," Detective Lin nodded. "Derek and Julianne weren't just torturing Toby to make him look unstable. They were desperately trying to circumvent that Swiss freeze. The only way they could unlock the primary capital was by having Toby declared permanently incapacitated before his ninth birthday, allowing them to petition for international conservatorship. That’s why Derek became increasingly aggressive over the last few months. Toby’s ninth birthday is next month."
I turned to look at Toby. He was carefully coloring a bright red cape on his superhero drawing, humming a quiet tune to himself.
He had saved us.

His instinct to hide that tiny flash drive in the remote had not just exposed a cruel stepfather—it had detonated a conspiracy that had cost his father his life and nearly ended our own.
