Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Sterling Dynasty

Victoria Sterling knelt on the floor, surrounded by the discarded, fraudulent DNA papers. Her manicured hands pressed against her mouth, her chest heaving as if she were drowning.

The socialites and billionaires who had kissed her ring for three decades shrank away from her in disgust. Whispers rose into an angry, chaotic murmur.

“Traitor.”

“She killed our soldiers for a profit margin.”

“She murdered her own son!”

“It wasn’t like that!” Victoria suddenly shrieked, scrambling to her feet like a wild animal cornered in a cage. Her designer veil slipped from her head, revealing disheveled hair and a face twisted into madness. “Julian didn’t understand business! He was weak! He was sentimental! He wanted to bankrupt us! That armor contract was worth four point two billion dollars! Without it, Sterling Global would have been liquidated! We would have been ruined!”

“So you cut the brakes on his car?” Evelyn asked.

The question hit Victoria like a physical blow. The matriarch froze, her breath catching in her throat.

“I... I didn’t cut anything!” Victoria stammered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. “It was an accident! The police report ruled it driver fatigue! He fell asleep at the wheel and hit the guardrail! The bridge had no surveillance cameras!”

“The bridge didn’t,” Evelyn said calmly, stepping closer. “Julian’s car did.”

Evelyn signaled to General Vance. Vance tapped his tactical tablet.

On the cathedral screens, a new feed appeared: night-vision dashcam footage pulled from Julian’s luxury sedan, recovered from the riverbed by Navy divers two hours ago.

The video showed Julian driving across the Bear Mountain Bridge. The dashboard clock read 2:14 AM. Suddenly, an unmarked black heavy-duty pickup truck accelerated from the darkness behind him. The truck rammed Julian’s rear bumper once, sending his sedan swerving. Julian fought the wheel, his knuckles white, but the black truck slammed into his driver’s side with devastating force, crushing the door and forcing the car through the metal barrier into the freezing black waters below.

The truck had paused at the shattered guardrail for five seconds. The driver’s side window had rolled down.

The high-resolution infrared military camera enhanced the driver’s face on screen: it was Victoria’s personal head of security, Victor Vance—no relation to the General—a man who had been on Victoria’s private payroll for twenty years.

A scream tore from Chloe’s throat. “Oh God... Mom... you said... you told me Victor was just following him to keep him safe!”

Victoria turned on her daughter, slapping her across the face with a sickening crack. “Shut up, you idiot!” Victoria roared. “Shut your mouth!”

Chloe fell back into the pew, weeping hysterically, clutching her stinging cheek.

Victoria turned back toward Evelyn, her chest rising and falling violently. The facade of the elegant high-society matriarch was completely stripped away, leaving only an unhinged, predatory monster.

“You think this changes anything, General?” Victoria sneered, her voice dropping into a venomous, guttural hiss. “You think Julian’s little home movies mean anything in a court of law? Julian is dead! His shares revert to the Sterling Living Trust, which *I* control! You have no legal standing here! You and that bastard will get nothing! I will tie you up in litigation until that child is thirty years old! You will leave this church with nothing but the clothes on your back!”

Attorney Cole stepped between them, pulling a leather-bound folio from her case.

“Mrs. Sterling, you are legally illiterate,” Cole stated with icy professionalism. “Julian Sterling executed a Living Will and Transfer on Death Deed thirty-six hours ago, filed under Section 4-B of the New York Estates, Powers, and Trusts Law. Because Julian was legally married to General Evelyn Cross—a marriage registered in Arlington, Virginia eight months ago—Julian’s 51% controlling voting shares do not pass to the Sterling Trust.”

Cole opened the document, revealing Julian’s bold signature alongside three federal notary seals.

“As of midnight yesterday,” Cole announced, her voice booming through the cathedral, “Lieutenant General Evelyn Cross is the sole majority shareholder, Chairman of the Board, and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Global Dynamics.”

Victoria’s eyes bulged. “No... no! That’s impossible! Julian couldn’t do that without a board vote!”

“Julian owned the Class-A super-voting shares inherited directly from his father,” Cole replied coldly. “He had unilateral authority. And her first official corporate act as Chairman was signed thirty minutes ago.”

Attorney Cole looked at the three trembling board members who had tried to flee.

“By order of Chairman Evelyn Cross, the entire Board of Directors of Sterling Global Dynamics is hereby dissolved. All corporate assets, intellectual property, and financial accounts have been placed under federal receivership by the Department of Defense Defense Logistics Agency.”

Victoria stared at Evelyn as if looking at the devil herself.

The empire was gone. The money was gone. The influence was gone. In less than twenty minutes, the pregnant woman she had tried to throw onto the street had systematically dismembered her life’s work.

“You...” Victoria choked, lunging toward Evelyn with her fingers curved like talons. “You ruined us! You ruined my family!”

Before Victoria could take two steps, General Vance moved.

He didn’t draw a weapon. He simply stepped into her path, his broad, armored chest colliding with her. The impact sent Victoria flying backward, crashing hard onto the stone steps leading up to the altar. Her pearls snapped, scattering hundreds of expensive white beads across the floor like teeth.

“Mrs. Victoria Sterling,” General Vance announced, his voice devoid of pity. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate treason, and the procurement of fraudulent biological records to obstruct a federal investigation.”

The church doors opened once more.

This time, it wasn't the military. A dozen FBI agents in blue tactical vests, accompanied by the United States Marshals Service, flooded the cathedral aisles, zip-ties and handcuffs gleaming at their waists.
