Chapter 7 - The Federal Subpoena

The courtroom descended into absolute pandemonium.
"Wait! Wait! You can't do this!" Harrison Croft screamed, waving his arms like a madman as the federal agents walked down the center aisle, their boots thudding in unison against the hardwood floor. "This is an ongoing civil proceeding! My clients are entitled to due process! You cannot execute an arrest warrant inside a state supreme courtroom without judicial leave!"
"Sit down, Mr. Croft, before I have the marshals put you in restraints as well," Judge Vance-Holt commanded, her gavel coming down with the force of an executioner's axe. "Special Agent Miller, the bar is cleared. Execute your warrants."
Arthur Sterling backed up until his spine hit the mahogany gallery rail. His chest was heaving, his face drained of every drop of blood, looking twenty years older than he had twenty minutes ago.
"Do you know who I am?!" Arthur roared, his voice cracking into a desperate, hollow shriek. "I have dinner with United States Senators! I have the direct cell phone number of the Secretary of Defense! You touch me and your careers are over! You hear me?! OVER!"
Special Agent Miller didn't even pause. He walked up to Arthur, pulled a pair of heavy, matte-black steel handcuffs from his belt, and snapped Arthur’s left wrist behind his back with practiced, brutal efficiency.
*CLICK.*
Arthur gasped as the steel bit deep into his flesh—the exact same wrist he had grabbed of mine only half an hour ago.
"Arthur Sterling," Agent Miller said calmly, reading from a small card, "you are under arrest pursuant to Title 18 of the United States Code, Section 1001, making false statements; Section 1343, wire fraud; and Section 1031, major fraud against the United States. You have the right to remain silent..."
"Arthur! Arthur, do something!" Eleanor screamed, clinging to the bench as two federal agents approached her. "Don't touch me! These are vintage pearls! Don't you dare touch me!"
"Ma'am, stand up and place your hands behind your back," the female agent said, her voice completely devoid of emotion. Within seconds, the immaculate socialite who had once sneered at my department-store shoes was bent over the spectator bench, her wrists secured with plastic zip-ties, her tear-streaked face pressed against the cold wood.
Julian didn't fight. He fell to his knees beside the counsel table, his hands clutched over his head, sobbing like a terrified child.
"Evie... please," he begged, looking up at me through tear-blurred eyes, his vicuña suit crumpled and ruined against the dusty floor. "Please, Evie! Tell them! Tell them I didn't know! I love you! I made a mistake! We can drop the divorce! We can fix this! I'll give you everything! Every single dollar! Just don't let them take me to prison!"
I stood over him, my face an impenetrable mask of military discipline.
"You didn't make a mistake, Julian," I said, my voice dropping so that only he could hear. "A mistake is forgetting to call me on my birthday. What you did was steal from the men and women who put their lives on the line for this country, and then you tried to throw me out on the street with five thousand dollars so you could keep playing the billionaire."
"I was afraid of my father!" he wept, snot running down his upper lip. "He controlled everything! He told me what to do!"
"You're a thirty-four-year-old grown man," I said coldly. "In the military, we have a saying: *An illegal order is an order you are obligated to disobey.* You chose the money. Now you get to choose your bunk."
Agent Miller’s partner stepped behind Julian, pulled his hands from his head, and clicked a third pair of cuffs around his wrists.
"Julian Sterling, on your feet," the agent ordered.
Julian whimpered as he was hoisted upward, his designer loafers dragging along the floorboards as he was led toward the center aisle.
As the federal agents began marching the Sterling family toward the back doors, Arthur turned his head back, his eyes burning with absolute, psychotic hatred.
"You haven't won, Evelyn!" Arthur snarled, his teeth bared like a rabid animal. "I have sixty million dollars in offshore trusts you'll never touch! I have the best appellate lawyers in the world! I will be out on bail by five o'clock, and I will spend every dime I have destroying your reputation! You will never practice law again! I'll have you disbarred! I'll tell the press you leaked classified procurement files! I will bury you under ten feet of dirt!"
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance-Holt interjected, her voice thundering across the chamber. "Given the severe flight risk demonstrated by your undisclosed offshore holdings, and given your direct threats of witness intimidation made in open court, I am issuing an immediate judicial remand notice to the federal magistrate. You will not be receiving bail today. Or tomorrow."
Arthur’s face twisted in silent, helpless agony as the heavy courtroom doors swung open, exposing the hallway beyond.
May you like
And in that hallway stood a nightmare the Sterlings had never anticipated.
