Chapter 8 - Tiffany’s Counter-Attack

Tiffany marched across the brick patio, her cheap sneakers squeaking against the damp stone. She completely ignored Julian, who was still kneeling on the ground like a broken beggar, and planted herself directly in front of Eleanor’s table.

"You think you’re so smart, don't you, Eleanor?" Tiffany sneered, crossing her arms over her chest. "You think you can just pull the rug out from under us and walk away like some untouchable grand dame of Manhattan? Well, I have news for you. You played yourself."

Eleanor took a slow sip of her Earl Grey tea. "Is that so, Ms. Croft?"

"Yes, that is so!" Tiffany snapped, pulling her smartphone from her pocket and thrusting the screen toward Eleanor’s face. "Do you know what this is? This is a draft of an exclusive story for *Page Six* and *The Daily Mail*. Headline: *Billionaire Matriarch Eleanor Vance Trashes Son’s Wedding in Violent Fit of Jealous Rage, Assaults Bride, and Leaves 250 Guests Abandoned.*"

Julian scrambled to his feet, horrified. "Tiffany, stop! What are you doing?!"

"Shut up, Julian!" Donald Croft barked, stepping up beside his daughter, his eyes narrowed at Eleanor. "Let her handle this. Your mother wants to play hardball? We’ve got media contacts that would love to tear down the pristine reputation of the Vance Family Foundation. Eleanor, by noon today, your phone will be ringing off the hook with reporters asking why you attacked my daughter on her wedding day."

Tiffany smiled—a vicious, venomous grin of triumphant malice.

"I took photos of my neck and wrists this morning, Eleanor," Tiffany lied smoothly. "I have three bridesmaids who are prepared to swear under oath that you attacked me first, that you were intoxicated, and that you threw the first glass of champagne. By the time I’m done with you, your social club memberships will be revoked, your charity boards will demand your resignation, and your family name will be absolute mud."

Tiffany leaned over the table, resting her hands on the iron surface, her face inches from Eleanor’s bruised cheek.

"Here is the deal, old woman," Tiffany hissed. "You drop the cross-default clause on Julian’s loans. You transfer the deed of the Park Avenue penthouse into a joint trust with my name on it. You pay the sixty-two-thousand-dollar damage fee to the Belrose, and you deposit one million dollars into Julian’s corporate account to settle his debts. Do that by 5:00 PM today, and I kill the story. Refuse... and I will destroy whatever is left of your pathetic life."

Throughout the entire tirade, Eleanor Vance did not blink. Her heart rate did not elevate. She did not tremble.

Instead, she set her teacup down with delicate precision and reached into the pocket of her cashmere sweater. She pulled out a sleek digital audio recorder and tapped the stop button with her thumb.

*BEEP.*

Tiffany’s triumphant smile faltered slightly. "What is that?"

"Extortion under New York Penal Law Section 155.05, Subsection 2," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the garden doorway.

Marcus Vance stepped out onto the patio.

Behind Marcus stood two men dressed in sharp, dark blue suits with gold law enforcement badges pinned to their lapels, accompanied by a woman holding a manila file folder bearing the official seal of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

Donald Croft’s face instantly drained of all color. He staggered back half a step, his breath catching in his throat. "Marcus... what is this?"

"Good morning, Donald," Marcus said with cold, predatory delight. "This is Special Agent Ramirez from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, and Assistant District Attorney Miller from the Major Economic Crimes Bureau."

Tiffany spun around, her eyes darting between the badges and her father’s terrified expression. "What is going on?! Dad?!"

Marcus walked over to the table and dropped a heavy, three-inch binder directly in front of Donald Croft. The thud of the binder sounded like the falling blade of a guillotine.

"Did you really think we wouldn't audit the Belrose invoices, Donald?" Marcus asked, his voice dripping with icy contempt. "For the past six months, you have been running a fraudulent kickback scheme through 'Croft Media Consulting.' You inflated the catering, floral, and lighting contracts for this wedding by nearly two hundred percent, funneling seventy-four thousand dollars of Eleanor’s money into offshore accounts to pay off your personal gambling debts in Atlantic City."

"That’s a lie!" Donald stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead, drenching his collar. "That was legitimate consulting work!"

"The invoices were forged using Julian’s corporate digital signature without his knowledge," ADA Miller said, stepping forward, opening her file. "Which constitutes second-degree grand larceny, identity theft, and tax fraud. We executed a search warrant on your consulting firm’s storage facility in Queens two hours ago, Mr. Croft. We have the ledger. We have the canceled cashier’s checks. And now, thanks to Mrs. Vance’s audio recording, we have your daughter on tape committing attempted grand larceny by extortion."

Tiffany’s smartphone slipped from her trembling fingers, hitting the brick patio with a sharp *crack*, the screen shattering into a spiderweb of dead glass.

"No..." Tiffany whimpered, turning her frantic gaze toward Julian. "Julian! Tell them it’s not true! You authorized those consulting fees! You told my father he could handle the vendor logistics!"

Julian looked at Donald Croft. Then he looked at the shattered phone on the ground.

The fog in Julian’s mind finally burned away. He remembered the papers Donald had slipped into his briefcase during dinner meetings. He remembered the "routine logistical authorizations" he had signed while trying to impress Tiffany’s father.

They hadn't just used him for his mother’s money. They had set him up as the legal fall guy for their financial crimes.

"You used my signature?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with a terrifying, hollow rage. "You used my corporate entity to launder stolen money?"

"Julian, baby, listen to me—" Tiffany pleaded, reaching out to touch his arm.

Julian snatched his arm back as if she were a venomous snake.

"Don't touch me!" Julian roared, his voice tearing from his throat with enough raw power to make the sparrows scatter from the maple tree. "You were stealing from my mother! You were stealing from my family! You set me up to take the fall for your father’s debts!"

"Julian, please!" Donald croaked, raising his hands in surrender. "We can work this out! We are family now!"

"You are not family," Eleanor Vance’s voice cut through the garden like a blast of sub-zero wind.

Eleanor stood up from her chair.

She did not look like an elderly victim. She stood tall, her posture regal, her gray eyes burning with the absolute, untouchable authority of a woman who had conquered every demon that had ever crossed her path.

She pointed a single, unyielding finger at Donald and Tiffany Croft.

"Arrest them."
