Chapter 7 - The Viral Firestorm

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting from Marcus to Clara, and finally to his unlocked laptop displaying the Cayman offshore ledger.

For three seconds, the penthouse was suffocated by a deafening silence.

Then, a dark, venomous laugh bubbled up from Julian’s chest. He unbuttoned his suit jacket, casually sliding his hands into his pockets, though his eyes burned with a murderous intensity.

"Clara," Julian said, shaking his head with mock admiration. "You really are like a cockroach. You crawl out of a hospital bed, drag your pregnant belly through rain and loading docks, just to rifle through my desk. Did you honestly think you could outrun this?"

Marcus stepped in front of Clara, his fists clenched. "Back off, Vance. We have the logs. We have the memory cache. We have the Cayman account numbers. Your little frame-job is finished."

Julian didn't even look at Marcus. He snapped his fingers, and the two security operatives stepped forward, their hands resting on the grips of concealed tasers beneath their coats.

"Marcus, please," Julian sighed patronizingly. "Do you think the board of Apex Capital is going to listen to an entry-level quantitative analyst and an emotionally unstable woman who was publicly filmed slapping her husband at a baby shower?"

Julian pulled out his personal smartphone and turned the screen toward them.

"Have you checked Twitter, Clara? Or LinkedIn? Or the financial news networks?"

Clara’s gaze flickered to the screen.

Her stomach dropped into a bottomless void.

A video was playing on a loop on a major financial news platform. It was the footage from the baby shower. But it had been maliciously, expertly edited.

The video opened with Julian standing peacefully by the gift table, smiling warmly, holding out his hands. Then, it cut directly to Clara screaming, lunging across the floor, delivering a ferocious slap across his face, and violently shoving him backward into the towering crystal table, sending champagne flutes and presents smashing to the ground. The preceding minutes—Julian announcing her forced resignation, his insulting threats, and the sickening slap he had delivered to her pregnant face—had been completely excised from the footage.

The headline beneath the video flashed in bold red letters:

**APEX CAPITAL SENIOR VP SUFFERS VIOLENT PRENATAL BREAKDOWN AT BABY SHOWER AMID RUMORS OF MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FINANCIAL MISCONDUCT.**

The video had six million views. The comments were an avalanche of vitriol, condemnation, and mock sympathy for Julian:

*“She’s completely unhinged! Look at how she attacked him!”*

*“Pregnancy hormones are no excuse for corporate fraud and domestic violence.”*

*“Julian Vance handled that with pure class. She belongs in an institution.”*

"By 4:00 PM today," Julian said, his voice dropping into a chilling, triumphant purr, "the board meets to formally vote on my mother’s settlement offer. You are officially designated as medically incapacitated. The fourteen million is already untraceable. If you try to walk into that boardroom with your little flash drive, my security team will have you escorted out in zip-ties for corporate trespassing."

Julian stepped closer, his face inches from Clara’s, his breath hot against her welted cheek.

"You lost, Clara. Hand over the flash drive. Go back to the hospital, have my baby, and maybe—just maybe—I’ll let you see her on her birthdays through a pane of glass."

Clara looked at the video playing on the screen. She looked at Julian’s smug, arrogant face.

And then, she began to laugh.

It was not a hysterical laugh. It was a cold, melodic, utterly terrifying sound that made the hair on the back of Marcus’s neck stand up.

"What’s so funny, Clara?" Julian hissed, his smile faltering.

"You really don't understand how the internet works, do you, Julian?" Clara said, tilting her head with supreme pity. "You spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to leak an edited, thirty-second clip to your PR cronies. But you forgot one tiny, insignificant detail."

Julian’s eyes narrowed. "What detail?"

"Sarah Chen," Clara said, her voice ringing like a silver bell. "Sarah didn't just attend our baby shower as a coworker, Julian. She attended as my Maid of Honor. And when you lifted that champagne flute to announce that my career was over, Sarah was standing by the mimosa fountain... live-streaming the entire shower to a private baby-registry group of four hundred people."

Julian’s skin paled slightly.

"Marcus," Clara commanded without breaking eye contact with her husband. "Check the trending page on Twitter."

Marcus pulled out his phone, tapped the screen twice, and let out a breathless, triumphant gasp.

"Clara," Marcus smiled, turning the screen toward Julian. "The unedited, full-length 4K video just hit the web twenty minutes ago. It has fifteen million views. It shows you slapping her across the face while she’s holding her belly. It shows you cutting her corporate badge with scissors. And it includes the audio of you screaming, *'You belong to this house now.'*"

Julian snatched the phone from Marcus’s hand, his eyes widening in pure, unadulterated horror as he watched the unedited video playing across the global feed of the *Wall Street Journal*, *Bloomberg*, and *TMZ*.

The viral tide had turned into an uncontrollable tsunami:

**#ARRESTJULIANVANCE** was the number-one trending topic in the United States.

"You... you bitch!" Julian roared, lunging forward with his arm raised.

"DON'T MOVE!" a deafening voice shouted.

The emergency stairwell door burst open with a concussive bang.

Three uniformed New York City police officers and two armed federal marshals spilled into the penthouse, their service weapons drawn and leveled directly at Julian’s security contractors.

"Julian Vance! Step away from the woman! Keep your hands where we can see them!" the lead officer barked.

Julian froze, his arm suspended in mid-air, his face draining of all color until it was the shade of curdled milk.

Clara stepped back, straightening her coat around her child, her voice echoing with the absolute authority of an executioner.

"Officer," Clara said calmly. "Arrest this man for felony corporate wire fraud, identity theft, and domestic aggravated battery. And then, call me a town car. I have a board meeting to attend."
