Chapter 7 - The Shadows on Base

“You thought I was working alone?” Marcus Sterling whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and psychotic euphoria. “You really thought a logistics captain could divert five tons of military electronics without local security?”

General Vance grabbed Sterling by the collar of his operational uniform and hauled him out of his chair, slamming him against the reinforced steel wall.

“Who did you hire, Sterling?” Vance roared, pressing his forearm against the captain’s windpipe. “Name them!”

“Blackstone Tactical,” Sterling choked out, struggling for breath. “The private security contractors guarding the Hangar Four retrofit project... They’re not private contractors. They’re former South African mercenaries and rogue PMCs. They knew if I went down, their smuggling corridor was finished!”

“General!” the major yelled, staring through the reinforced glass window of the SCIF’s entry airlock. “We have multiple armed hostiles in tactical gear moving down Corridor B! They have submachine guns and thermite charges! They’re cutting through the secondary blast doors!”

Elena Cross didn't hesitate for a single second.

While the general held Sterling and the major panicked, Elena reached behind the small of her back. Beneath her tailored charcoal blazer, she unclipped an ultra-compact SIG Sauer P365 Legion, racked the slide with a smooth, practiced motion, and checked the chamber.

General Vance glanced at her, surprised by the muscle memory she displayed.

“Five years in CIA Special Activities Division before I took the oversight job, General,” Elena said, answering the unasked question with icy calm. “Now release this piece of filth and let’s secure this perimeter. How many men do we have in the immediate sector?”

“Just my personal detail and the two master sergeants at the door,” Vance said, letting Sterling drop to the floor like a sack of wet laundry. The general drew his own M17 service pistol. “The quick-reaction force is stationed at the north garrison—three miles away. With the grid down, the blast doors will be sealed automatically. We’re cut off.”

“They don’t want to hold the base,” Elena analyzed with lightning speed. “They know the regular army will crush them in twenty minutes. This is an extraction and sanitation operation. They’re here to grab Sterling, eliminate the evidence on that laptop, and kill anyone who can testify before the military tribunal.”

A violent detonation shook the floor.

*BOOM!*

The heavy blast doors twenty yards down the corridor buckled inward, smoke and the acrid smell of burning magnesium flooding the air vents. Through the observation window, silhouettes in sterile black tactical uniforms—bearing no national flags or unit patches—advanced through the smoke with suppressed carbines raised.

“Sergeant Miller! Sergeant Hayes! Form a fatal funnel at the airlock!” General Vance commanded, his tactical instincts taking complete command of his sixty-two-year-old body.

The two master sergeants knelt behind the reinforced ballistic divider in the doorway, their M4 carbines leveled at the smoke.

“Sterling, stay on the floor or I put a bullet through your knee myself,” Elena snapped, stepping into position beside General Vance, her pistol leveled with steady, two-handed precision.

Through the haze, the first PMC operative stepped into view, his weapon sweeping toward the glass.

*POP-POP-POP!*

Sergeant Miller fired three controlled rounds through the cracked airlock. The lead mercenary collapsed instantly, his body crashing to the concrete floor. But behind him, four more operatives advanced, laying down a devastating hail of suppressed automatic fire.

*THWIP-THWIP-THWIP-THWIP!*

Rounds shattered the outer layer of ballistic glass, spider-webbing the reinforced observation window. Ricochets whined off the steel bulkheads.

“They’re deploying flashbangs!” Sergeant Hayes shouted.

A small, cylindrical canister rolled across the linoleum, spinning directly toward the airlock.
