Chapter 17 - The Broken Vault

Back inside the study, the heavy oak doors were bolted shut. Emma was pacing the Persian rug, her eyes wild with panic while Kane monitored police frequencies through his headset. Sophie had been taken up to the reinforced playroom with Kane’s most trusted bodyguard.
"She’s framing me for Jonathan’s murder?" Emma gasped, stopping dead in front of Daniel. "Daniel, I never met your father! I saw him once from across a parking lot when I was pregnant, and his security guards escorted me off the premises! I didn't even know what thallium was until this morning!"
"I know," Daniel said, grabbing Emma by the arms and forcing her to look into his eyes. "Look at me, Emma. I know you're innocent. Kane knows it. But the legal machine Evelyn has built doesn't care about the truth. It cares about ink on paper."
"Then we run," Emma said, tears finally breaking past her fierce composure. "We take Sophie, we take the passports, and we fly Kane’s plane to a non-extradition country. We can live in Argentina. We can change our names."
"If you run, you look guilty," Kane interrupted grimly, taking off his headset. "State police have already set up vehicle checkpoints on Route 7. They aren't waiting for the 10:00 AM warrant. Evelyn’s contacts in the governor’s office accelerated the timeline. They’re forty minutes out."
Daniel paced over to the massive oil portrait of Jonathan Sterling that hung above the fireplace. The portrait showed Jonathan at sixty, seated in a high-backed leather chair, his hands resting on an ornate walking cane topped with a silver stag.
Daniel stared into his father’s painted eyes—those cold, unyielding eyes that had dictated every decision of Daniel's youth.
*Repaired things don’t have to pretend they were never broken.* Emma’s words from the night before echoed in Daniel’s skull.
"Jonathan wasn't stupid," Daniel muttered suddenly.
Emma wiped her tears. "What?"
"My father was paranoid, vindictive, and controlling," Daniel said, turning around to face them, his mind working with frantic speed. "He trusted Vanessa, but he kept an archive on her. He didn't trust Emma, but he had Arthur Vance deliver a sealed will. If Jonathan knew someone was poisoning him with thallium, he wouldn't just leave a forged paper trail to frame Emma. He would have kept the real evidence to protect the family line."
Daniel walked directly to the fireplace, grabbed the frame of the portrait, and yanked it sideways. Behind it was not a digital keypad or a modern dial safe. It was an antique mechanical brass lock requiring a physical key.

"Arthur gave me Jonathan's will," Daniel said breathlessly, turning toward the desk. "Where is the briefcase?"
